It does work, but the cost is so prohibitive that I can't justify its use
Listen, the product works but there is so little provided for the amount of money that this costs that I was looking for the gold flakes at the bottom of the little bottle... It was not worth the money, in my opinion. I bought a quart of Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator (gray) at the same time and was able get very consistent results with it for about 20% the cost (ounce to ounce, or mL to mL as the case may be). I know that my free reviews and opinions are worth what you paid for them, but I don't like throwing money away to anyone that I don't have to. The Rubio project left a bad taste in my mouth because of the cost.

Didn’t really do anything
For those people complaining about the picture vs what you get learn what 100ml is. As for why I’m here; this stuff simply just didn’t work. My bf followed the instructions perfectly and it really didn’t do anything to the oak or ash he put it on. Like nothing happened. Idk if maybe it’s inert from sitting on a shelf too long? Idk what causes the chemical reaction or if the active ingredient can go bad but it was basically putting water on wood and expecting it to do something. I guess that’s what I get for ordering it off amazon tho.

Excellent product if used correctly
Excuse the long review. I hope my experience with this product will help you decide if it will work for you. Most of the negative reviews find fault with the size of the bottle, (purchased the sample by mistake?) the coverage of the product, or they had trouble with their final finish. Not many reviews mention much about the product itself.I just completed a chair made of Red Oak. I used Rubio Monocoat Fumed to alter the color of the wood, finished/sealed the wood with Rubio Monocoat “Pure” Oil Finish, and then added a little more protection and shine with some furniture wax. Included are pictures of the raw wood, after using the Fumed (greyer looking wood), after using the Monocoat Pure, and the finished chair. The Amazon posting isn’t very clear on exactly what this product is. It is not a traditional stain or a finish. It is a water based treatment that mimics Ammonia Fuming. Ammonia Fuming was used back in the early 1900’s to darken the color of oak and other woods with high amounts of tannins. Fumes from Ammonia react with tannins in wood and the color will change. This product produces the same effect without the caustic chemicals and dangerous fumes. The product reacts to the tannins and changes the color of the wood. Rubio Monocoat Fumed much easier and safer than the original ammonia method.Ammonia Fuming wasn’t used to mimic oxidized wood (grey aged wood) but to darken the wood and bring out grey tones. The wood color turns a more intense grey initially but mellows out into the correct colors after a final finish is applied. Results depend on the wood used. This product only works on raw unfinished or untreated wood with a high tannin content. Results can vary quite a bit, which is why they sell a small 100ml sample bottle to try the product out. I used scrap to test out the Fumed product with different woods, oils and finishes before deciding on the final combination. The Monocoat finishing oils are also available in small samples, making it easy to dial in my perfect combination.I used very porous red oak, so it soaked up the product quickly, and it didn’t go very far. Coverage would be better with a less porous wood like white oak. I expected it; every time I use red oak for a project, I end up using a lot more product as the wood soaks everything up like a sponge. I planned on using twice the recommended coverage.Do not leave the wood unfinished after using Fumed. It is not a finish. It does not add any protection and the effect isn’t even permanent until it is finished with another product. In fact, even though the wood color will change, it is still considered raw wood. It will absorb moisture, warp, stain, and change until the results are locked in with a top coat of something else.Rubio Monocoat products are expensive. I’m not sure if it is because the stuff is imported from Europe, or because of the focus on low VOC’s and environmentally friendly products. Either way, I have never been disappointed in the results when I use the product correctly. Worth it.

Misleading
When ordered, I ordered 1 liter of the product. And that should be real close to a quart. According to my conversion app.I received a very small sample bottle. Not happy about that. And hopefully will not be billed for the 1 liter bottle I ordered. We will see.
