You don't have to use all four outputs, but it can drive multiple headphones simultaneously if you want. I use it so that I can listen to a TV through headphones. FYI I use this with an optical-digital-to-RCA converter to convert my HDTV's optical audio out to a power sufficient to drive a pair of headphones through roughly 20 feet of thin \"headphone extension cord\" cable.
