Great box set!4 CDs and 2 Blu-Ray Discs will keep you busy listening, listening and listening again to new 5.1 & stereo remixes and live studio mixes.The two blu-ray disc mixes are great to listen to on my 5.1 stereo system. The 4 cds give you tons of music to play over and over.The 4 cds are different mixes of the songs in the box set. Disc 1 is called the Ultimate Mixes which are remixed true to the originals with the goal of the best possible sound of the originals.Disc 2 are new mixes, disc 3 are raw studio mixes and disc 4 is called evolution mix to show you how the recordings were developed.The 119 page book will provide plenty of new facts or facts you may have forgotten. The photographs are well worth observing also.I consider this box set a must have for serious students of John Lennon.

First off as an old rocker that has been to, too many loud concerts in the 70’s, I can’t really appreciate the sound difference of blu-ray.Also as an OCD Lennon fan I must have everything he ever recorded, even if I have multiple identical versions of the same track. The problem with this set that is the music is split across 4 x CD’s and 2 x blu ray discs. I initially thought that every track included on the blu-ray disc would be included on the CD’s. Unfortunately this is not the case. The blu-ray’s have 85 tracks and the CD’s have 61 tracks. I haven’t figured out yet what tracks are missing. The problem for me is that I like to digitize all my music on iTunes and keep the CD’s as backup. Now I have to find some software to rip a blu-ray into wav files so I can import the missing tracks into iTunes, which is a pain.Anyway the music is fantastic of course. Imagine has always been one of my favorite Lennon albums, along with The Plastic Ono Band, which I hope they will do a similar set next (hopefully with all the music on the CD's if they do a CD/blu-ray combo).

I was somewhat reluctant to dish out the money for John Lennon's Imagine. I've already purchased the cd, remastered cd and recently a Japanese SACD of the album. The Imagine-Ultimate Collection is a superb collection of everything you would want regarding this album. The hardcover book alone probably is worth the price. You receive a blurray, quad and outtakes. Truly this project was motivated on the love of the man and the music. One couldn't ask for a better box set of a classic album, maybe Plastic Ono Band is in the works? John's first album would be fantastic if assembled as this Imagine box set. Personally, my two favorite Beatles are performing together on this album.Bottomline, if you are a casual John Lennon fan you may want to purchase the two disc set. If you are a Beatle and Beatle Solo fan, this is a MUST. You will not regret it....some of George Harrison's best slide guitar work-Strong.

This is the best ever remix and remaster of imagine ever Yoko did a wonderful job and should be proud what she has done for John Lennon and this ultimate collection box set the sound quality is superb the presentation of this album is immaculate very well done John would be proud everyone should stop bitching on these reviews on this album it is perfect a 10 out of 10 a perfect score 5 stars you idiots who write these reviews quit your damn complaining and Thank Yoko for putting this magnificent album out for John's birthday!!! Happy birthday John we miss you..love you John!!!

What can I say. Perfection. Remastered 96k 24bit dts-hd master audio. John is in the room with you. This record has never sounded so good and there is so much to listen to. Four Cd's and two Blu-Ray Discs. If you are an audiophile be sure to get this, all the great 5.1 recordings seem to be out of print not too long after their release and that is just sad. Even if you don't have a 5.1 system the remastered stereo recordings sound better than ever. Nicely packaged and a beautiful book documenting the making of this Iconic Record.

Saw this item and thought what the heck. Just trying to build my collection. Have not listened to Lennon in a long time.Forgot how good this Album is. The CD's are very good quality. Have not watched the DVD's yet..The Book is very good, with great information about the process of the recording. It also has some great behind the scene photo's.This is a good addition to any collection.

If only every "special deluxe edition" was as interesting as this one. Each song from the album (and others from the era), is explored from the beginning to the end of the recording process without getting redundant or boring. Of course, it helps to be familiar with the original album. Otherwise it could be overwhelming. The accompanying book is packed with mostly informative and helpful liner notes. It's a quality hardcover book, with lots of well-reproduced photos. The whole package was better than I expected, and I expected plenty.

Publicado en el ya muy lejano 1971. Después del perfecto ‘Plastic Ono Band’ de 1970, Lennon editó lo que sería su disco más comercial y pacifista. Un sonido mucho más melódico que su trabajo antecesor. Esta edición de lujo nos adentra a toda su creación, tomas alternas y ensayos, algunos de estos con su antiguo compañero, George Harrison.Me atrevo a decir que Lennon llego a lo más alto en creatividad en estos discos publicados en 1970 y 1971 respectivamente.Un disco que pasarán generaciones y siempre será recordado por su aportación a la humanidad y al amor.Simplemente maravilloso esta gran edición. Sin duda definitiva para todos los amantes de John Lennon.

Jawohl : 1222 ! Oder als Wort geschrieben : Eintausendzweihundertzweiundzwanzig ! Die Auflösung erfolgt später. Fast tut es mir leid, aber bei einer solch größeren Veröffentlichung von John Lennon -- endlich wieder seit 2010 -- kann ich nun mal keine gewöhnliche Rezension verfassen. Sogar ein Haushaltsgerät musste extra noch zu seinem Einsatz kommen .....Doch erst einmal ganz kurz und auch der Reihe nach : Im Herbst 1971 -- also 1 ½ Jahre nach Bekanntgabe der Beatles- Trennung durch Paul McCartney -- erschien jenes Album inkl. gleichnamiger Single. Es handelt sich um John Lennons zweites reguläres Studio- Album nach dem bereits authentisch guten "John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band" (1970). Und zur Übersicht : Noch zu Beatles- Zeiten hatte John drei musikalisch kaum ernstzunehmende, eher tagebuchartige Avantgarde- Alben (1968- 1969) und das deutlich empfehlenswertere "Live Peace in Toronto" (1969) veröffentlicht."Imagine" ist sein erstes Solo- Album, das sich auf Nummer 1 platzieren konnte -- dies sowohl in den USA als auch in UK und vielen weiteren Ländern dieser Welt. Der Titel- Song ist Johns bereits dritte ganz große Friedens- Hymne. Vorausgegangen waren "All you need ist love" (1967) und "Give peace a Chance" (1969). Für "Imagine" setzte John sich sogar extra an's Klavier. Dies möglicherweise im gesunden Konkurrenzdenken mit Paul McCartney, dessen Piano- Beiträge "Hey Jude" (1968) und "Let it be" sowie "The long and winding road" (1969/70) besonders großes Aufsehen erregen konnten. Aber auch John hatte bekanntlich zuvor schon in die Tastatur gegriffen. Gut zu sehen in den Clips "Strawberry fields forever" (1966) und "I am the walrus" (1967)."Imagine" ist ein wunderschönes Lied, das uns vereinen soll : "You may say I`m a dreamer, but I`m not the only one". Die in eine Textzeile gepressten Worte "and no religion too" sollen aussagen, dass Menschen wegen unterschiedlicher Religionen nicht streiten sollen. Überhaupt ist "Imagine" ein ganz starkes Album, das in keiner Sammlung fehlen sollte. Lassen wir es im Schnelldurchlauf an uns vorüberziehen : das spritzige "Crippled inside", das wunderschöne "Jealous guy" und auch "Oh my love", die schräg- eigenwilligen "It's so hard" und "I don't wanna be a soldier", das allgemein anprangernde "Gimme some truth", das speziell an Paul gerichtete, anklagende "How do you sleep", das philosophisch nach der Sinnfrage suchende "How" und das schwungvoll Rock'n Roll- hafte "Oh Yoko !"Werfen wir einen kurzen Blick hinter die Kulissen : Ex Beatles- Mitstreiter George Harrison ist mit an Bord (bzw. mit im Park, dem Tittenhurst- Park). Außerdem sein langwieriger Musik- Kumpel Klaus Voormann (einer der sogenannten "5. Beatles"). Weitere sehr gefragte Session- Musiker wie King Curtis (Saxophon), Jim Keltner (Drums) und Nicky Hopkin (der sich schon mit den Beatles bei "Revolution" kräftig mitaustoben durfte). Nicht zuletzt die rund 20 köpfigen Flux Fiddlers, immerhin Mitglieder des New Yorker Philharmonic Orchesters. Produziert wurde das Album neben John Lennon noch von zwei weiteren Personen, die mit zu den umstrittensten der gesamten Pop- Geschichte zählen dürften : Yoko Ono und Phil Spector.1987 erschien das Album erstmals auf CD. Somit im selben Jahr, in dem auch die regulären Beatles- Alben auf CD erschienen. Weitere tontechnische Auffrischungen gab es in den Jahren 2000 und 2010. Tja, und jetzt, 2018 ???"Imagine" ist schon ein enorm schweres Ding, nicht nur in seiner Genialität, sondern auch von seinem jetzigen Gewicht. So wurde ich neugierig : Ich nahm die Box in beide Hände und ließ die Küchenwaage zu ihrem Einsatz kommen -- und siehe da : Mehr als 1 Kilogramm, genau 1222 Gramm wurden mir angezeigt. Es ist schon ein gehöriges Gewicht, das man für sein Geld bekommt. Der größte Anteil davon bezieht sich auf das sehr empfehlenswerte Buch. Es ist kein bloßes Beiheft oder Büchlein. Es trägt 120 Seiten, ist sehr anspruchsvoll und aufwändig gemacht. Neben allen Song- Texten enthält es detaillierte Angaben zu den Aufnahmen, auch zu den neuen Mixen. Überhaupt gibt es sehr viele Fotos, größtenteils in Farbe, die nicht nur aus dem Produktions- Jahr 1971 stammen. U.a. zeigen sie John auch rein privat auf einer Japan- Kreuzfahrt im Jahr 1977.Kommen wir nun zu den vielen neuen Mixen -- und diese erschienen mir zunächst doch ziemlich unübersichtlich :CD 1 umfasst die regulären 10 Album- Songs von "Imagine" bis "Oh Yoko !" plus die sechs Songs der zusätzlichen drei Singles "Power to the People", "Happy Xmas" und "God save us". Letzteres wurde als "offenes Geheimnis" unter Pseudonym veröffentlicht. Von den reinen Titeln her ist CD 1 daher schon mal ein kleiner Gewinn. Die Mixe selbst werden als ULTIMATE MIXES angepriesen. Das Klangbild selbst ist allerdings nur minimal angehoben und unterscheidet sich lediglich im direkten Vergleich von der (recht dumpfen) 1987er CD- Ausgabe. In dem von mir ja grundsätzlich gelobten Beibuch wird dazu auf S. 92 allzu hochtrabend von "new ways of listening" geschwärmt. Hierbei handelt es sich aber nur um eine der leider allgemein verkaufsüblichen Flunkereien.CD 2 enthält zunächst die ELEMENT MIXES. Damit sind lediglich 4 Tracks gemeint. Drei davon sind rein instrumental gehalten. Der vierte Titel ragt heraus. Er besteht ausschließlich aus Johns Gesang, und zwar von der Ballade "Oh my love". Das klingt toll, wirklich toll, beinahe sogar sakral. Den Fan mag es beispielsweise an die reine Gesangsspur von "Because" erinnern (1969 aufgenommen, auf dem Album "Love", 2006, veröffentlicht). Im sehr angenehmen Sinne enthält "Oh my love" nicht so starke Gesangspausen (Aussetzer) wie das stets nachklingende "Because".Ab Track 5 geht es weiter mit den OUTTAKES. Hier handelt es sich sehr positiv um kein spärliches "Lost Lennon- Tapes"- Geschrammel, sondern um größtenteils recht füllig produzierte Alternativ- Versionen. Wenn im besagten Buch "with a little bit of additional effects" geschrieben steht (S. 96), so ist dies deutlich untertrieben. Es handelt sich vielmehr um schönen, dichten, satten Sound, der sich auch heutzutage gut anhören lässt. Track 18 hebe ich mal positiv hervor. Es ist ein Beispiel von John Lennons originell- lustigem Charakter : Mit leicht verstellter Stimme trällert er, nur von Trommelschlägen begleitet, "God save us".CD 3 besteht zunächst aus EXTENDED ALBUM VERSIONS aller 10 originalen Songs. Hier wurde nicht nachträglich künstlich verlängert, sondern es handelt sich tatsächlich um erfreulicherweise noch vorhandene längere Einspielungen der Original- Sessions. Ganz grob lässt es sich vielleicht so vorstellen, als wäre das ausführliche "I want you, she`s so heavy" vom Album "Abbey Road" (1969) damals nur in einer kürzeren Form und erst jetzt gestreckter veröffentlicht worden, dazu noch in einer alternativen Version. Größtenteils handelt es sich um richtig gitarrenbrazzig gute Werke. Gelegentlich hört man John, wie er seine Mitstreiter und nicht zuletzt sich selbst beim Singen und beim Spielen anfeuert. Langweilig, wie man vielleicht meinen könnte, wird es keinesfalls. Fünf weitere OUTTAKES treten im Anschluss noch hinzu, ebenso von guter Qualität. Insgesamt hat man alle eben genannten Aufnahmen von CD 3 -- also die EXTENDED ALBUM VERSIONS und die OUTTAKES -- noch einmal als RAW STUDIO MIXES zusammenfasst. Im Begleit- Buch wird dies so begründet, dass es sich um Tracks (zeitlich) "vor Hinzunahme der Streicher, des Saxophons und der Effekte" handelt (S. 102).CD 4 beinhaltet die sogenannte EVOLUTION DOKUMENTARY. Auch hier lässt sich sehr Interessantes finden. Das Buch berichtet von "how a song developed from it`s embryonic form" (S.104). Auch dies mag nicht so richtig zutreffen, denn so karg und rudimentär sind die Aufnahmen keinesfalls. Zwar hört man anfangs meist einstimmende Worte von John Lennon, aber auch hier sind alle Songs über einen sehr frühen "embryohaften" Zustand längst hinaus. Von Fan- Interesse mag es dabei sein, wie John und seine legendäre Runde hin und wieder abbricht und neu anfängt. Besonders gefällt mir der Abschluss- Song "Oh Yoko !" Neben Johns deutlich variiertem Gesang erhält auch jedes einzelne Instrument eine besondere, bereits ausgearbeitete Rolle.Die beiden weiteren Bluray- Ausgaben habe ich mir noch nicht angehört. Ohnehin sollte man eine derart schwere Box nicht hastig abarbeiten, sondern zu verfügbarer Zeit vielleicht bei angezündeter Kerze einfach interessiert- entspannt genießen. Doch vielleicht ein Hinweis : Die Aufnahmen der Blurays werden als QUADRASONIC- MIXES (u.a. im 5.1 Surround Sound) bezeichnet. Lediglich eine Handvoll alternativer Versionen ist hier zusätzlich vorhanden. Der komplette Rest ist identisch mit den Versionen der CDs zwei bis vier.Letztlich empfehle ich die Box aus gleich zwei Gründen : Zum ersten wegen des aufwändigen Buches. So manche von uns "Hardcore Beatles- Fans- Deluxe" werden sich vielleicht noch an die limitierten Genesis Publications von George Harrison erinnern. Sie waren fast so teuer wie ein Flug von Frankfurt nach Bangkok. Dagegen ist die Lennon- Box in all ihrer Umfänglichkeit für ca. 60 E. nicht zu teuer. Zweitens empfehle ich sie noch wegen der vielen alternativen Versionen von CD zwei, drei und vier. Gönnen Sie sich also Zeit......Rein vollständigkeitshalber sei auch noch gesagt : Völlig unbekannte Songs sind -- wie es zu erwarten war -- nicht dabei. Ebenso kommt kein "nackter John" aus seiner schweren Kiste rausgesprungen. Damit meine ich -- rein klangtechnisch -- die CD "Double Fantasy- Stripped Down" (2010). Ein Experiment, das ich für sehr erfrischend und gelungen halte. Von "Imagine" gibt es das noch immer nicht. Ein derart (musikalisch) "nackter John" -- s. auch "The Beatles- Naked" (2003) -- könnte im Jahr 2020 erscheinen : Zum 80. Geburtstag und 40. Todestag von John Lennon.Doch bis es soweit ist : Ich wünsche noch viel Freude beim musikalischen Entdecken !

There are bound to be those who say, “Not another reissue. How many times is this stuff going to be regurgitated?” Not as many as you think. And this isn’t ‘just a reissue of the Imagine album’. Whilst it has that 1971 classic remixed and remastered, this six CD edition is choc full of different takes and demos, isolated elements of the songs as well as unadorned ‘live’ versions. Oh and there’s a collage of each songs trip from demo to finished recording.The strange thing about the different takes included here is that to my ears there’s nothing wrong with any of them; Lennon obviously heard something he didn’t much care for. Mind you, whilst I expected the solo to come in on ‘Gimme Some Truth’, the elements mix of piano, drums and bass only on ‘Jealous Guy’ is magnificent. The alternate take of ‘Power To The People’ is jazzier but nowhere near as heavy and well worth a listen. The vocal only version of 'Oh My Love' is outstanding and strangely, take 3 of ‘Do The Oz’ has vocals by someone called Michael RamsdenBy wandering around your room, the unadorned mixes (‘Imagine’ stripped, if you like) sound even better in 5.1. Want to hear George’s guitar on ‘Oh My Love’? Stand front right. There’s plenty of chat before and after these raw mixes, though the first take of ‘Imagine’ was included in his ‘Anthology’ collection 20 years ago. However, if you don't have a 5.1 system, you are paying for two discs that you won't be able to get the full benefit from.The 120 page hardback book is a terrific read. With plenty of previously unseen photos, it gives an over view of the album before giving a detailed insight into each track, as well as the five extra songs. And some of the lyrics of 'Imagine' itself don't mean what you might think. There’s also information on the elements mixes, raw mixes, etc. and a handy 5.1 surround sound map. This insight helps you hear things in the songs you would certainly have missed - the stand up bass on 'Crippled Inside', for instance, is played by someone hitting the strings with drumsticks to make it sound like a tin can. Lennon's interview with Elliot Mintz is reproduced in full.As the casual listener won't care for hearing multiple versions of the songs, and the whole album was recorded in just 146 takes, this six CD set is for the die-hard Lennon fan (and for the overall package is good value) but there’s also a double CD that has a collection of outakes and demos on the second disc, a single CD of the original LP, a double album incorporating a dozen different takes, and a heavyweight vinyl version. This is the way all deluxe box sets should be, but the material has to be strong and familiar enough in the first place; and this album always was.
