A Century of Movie Posters: From Silent to Art House Hardcover – September 1, 2003

I learned so much about movie history, not just in hollywood, but in international cinema as well. The posters are great, some of the ones in there are actually pretty obscure. The book talks about the significance of each film, the poster design, and directors. I only wish that the poster pages were single-sided! I feel so sad when I take one out to decorate my wall :(

I wanted to study the "artwork" on movie posters. I bought this book for the pictures. Good quality, lots to see and get inspiration from. I'll bet the narrative is as informative as the visuals… might even read it one day.

This was a gift to my husband. He said it looked very interesting and that he did not already have. He was looking forward to reading it.

One reviewer got it right, "I'll bet the narrative is as informative as the visuals… might even read it one day.". Exactly. The academic imprint on the author wins again. Just HAS to editorialize. The posters don't need editorializing, they speak for themselves. Something like the song by Don Henley: "The Greeks don't need no freaks".

This is a collection of poster art examples that avoids attempting a "best of the best" theme, but rather tries to be representative of both the history of poster art and the history of the movies. I know of nothing comparable and think it would be a great purchase for artists, art students, cinematic historians and lovers of movies and poster art in general.

Bought it for a school project. Lacks enough material to compensate for the price and book was in poor condition.

This book was quite disappointing after the description that was given. I was looking for a good picture source book and this is not it. It has sat on our bookshelf for the last year and it will soon be on it's way to the charity shop for someone else to delight in.
