Q: Was the polishing agent(shellac, etc) food grade?

Hello, there is food grade coating on top, it is SGS certified

Q: Does this have a coating on the wood?

There is definitely a shiny coating (I know what bare wood feels/looks like in this isn’t it). I doubt any of these wooden cup (brands) are bare wood. If I had to make a guess I would guess polyurethane (it’s hard and shiny and looks sprayed on).. Short of sending it to a laboratory for analysis, only the manufacture can tell us what it is. I was hoping for bare wood too.

Q: Im planning to use it for hot drinks. Do I need to "curate" it before I use it for the first time?

No I use it for tea and it's almost scalding hot your good to go
