B**S
This is a useful tool for those who just cannot do AA.
I am so happy I found this guide. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in trying to maintain sobriety without AA. Additionally, this price was far less than I expected ( great value ), and the shipping was fast. 5 stars!!!!!

Good book, if you apply yourself
This was a good book. I grew up with alcoholism in my family and found that I was self medicating. It is a good book. If you really apply yourself you can do it! I can say that it helped me and my fiance for about 30 days, but then we went back to our old ways. But that's just like anything out there. I will pick it up again one day. I recommend it to anyone struggling with drinking even if you aren't a typical "alcoholic". Just if you find yourself drinking more than you used to. Or if you are a full blown alcoholic. This can help.UPDATE (2 years since my initial review): Years later, I gave a copy of this book to my mother. She quit drinking after reading it. Years of daily drinking to excess. She quit after she read this book. I am not into self help books, I buy them, but can never get into them. This book was just different. I no longer drink at all, haven't had a drink in nearly 2 years due to health reasons.

Fundamental basis for this book is factually wrong
As a qualifier, I have problems with alcohol addiction, and I am also a chemical engineer. I have tried AA and stayed sober for some time, but in the long run, it didn't work for me. I couldn't accept the first 3 steps of the 12, so I looked for an alternative. Unfortunately, this book is just factually wrong. The basis for the recovery program is based on Dorsman's assertion that alcohol is metabolized into glucose, so that alcohol consumption is equivalent to eating suger, causing hypoglycemia etc. This is plain wrong! Alcohol does have empty calories, but not because alcohol is a sugar. Alcohol is metabolized via it's own pathway through acetaldehyde to acetic acid to carbon dioxide (not glucose!) Your body will preferentially burn alcohol over any other foods since it is a poison and your body is desperately trying to get rid of the poison. As a byproduct of the metabolism, energy is generated. There are much better books for those looking to quit drinking without AA, Two suggestions: "The Easy Way to Stop Drinking" by Allen Carr and "Alcohol: How to give it up and be glad you did" by Philip Tate. I also wholeheartedly endorse giving AA a try. It didn't work for me, but it has worked for many people. I truly hope you (and I) can find the path to freedom from alcohol.

finally found easy help
it's to early to say I love it but I can honestly say it's a great hit. My husband who not a big reader first night done on page 11 of the book and only put it down cause it was bed time. He has strugled to find a way and I got this book for him so he could find other options to stay sober. When he's not able to make a meeting this gives him the help.

A good resource to keep around
Since I've quit drinking (on my own)I have read dozens of books on giving up alcohol. This book I liked but not in whole. I liked a lot of the ideas in the book and have post-its on the pages or chapters I really liked. I keep it in a cabinet where I kept my alcohol to remind myself of certain concepts and ideas that the book has. Every book on quitting have some really good chapters but this one has the most post-its for me.

Great book for anyone seeking an alternative to the traditional A.A. twelve step program.
Great book for those that have tried A.A. and don't like it or have had limited success with A.A.. Presents in easily understood terms some of the alternative to A.A.'s twelve step program. A.A. wasn't for me and this book has much information on treatment plans I never knew existed.

I love this book
I love this book! Despite a few reviews I've read-it is not a bashing AA guide. I am not comfortable going to meetings. I wanted nutrition guidence and more then just what AA could offer me or what I could get from it. If it helps you that's great and I'm happy for you. Those that are interested in a food/body connection and really good insight-how to stop a habit-how to deal with starting to quit....there is just so much this book offers!!

How to Wuit Drinking without AA
This book has very good information about how alcohol affects the whole body and the brain. This books gigs you diet information to helps with withdrawls and several other ways to keep active while trying to quit drinking without AA. It does have a chapter about how AA works. I actually use the information to enhance my AA meetings because it gives me health information that the AA Big Book does not.
