Indispensable book on Philippians
This is a commentary on Philippians that is so good you need home and away copies. Just in case.

I love this series
I love this series. Although I don't agree with everything that they say, I find them to be instrumental in understanding the new covenant scriptures and especially understanding the context in which they were written. In my opinion, some of them contain some liberal theology, but there are no perfect commentaries.

The best mid-level commentary on Philippians available!
Gordon Fee's commentary on Philippians is excellent. Fee argues for Pauline authorship and for the traditional view that Rome was his place of writing. He is thorough and scholarly, but not unreadable. If you are looking for a single commentary on Philippians to read, this is your commentary! It is hefty and sometimes wordy, but Fee's depth of insight is superb.

Background info useful
I would recommend this commentary for study or teaching/preaching in a church setting. The author provides useful background information on the culture of the time and brings out some points missing in other commentaries. This then helps you bridge the gap between their time and our time and apply what God is doing today thinking over that.

Boring cover, great book.
Gordon D. Fee is one of the easiest commentators to read and understand. This commentary has logical segments and straight forward descriptions. One does not need previous biblical studies/training to be able to use this book. I just wish they had a better cover, one that wouldn't make people overlook this on the shelf.

Excellent, scholarly commentary
Excellent commentary. Very scholarly and balances. Some parts he goes in to a little to much detail, but well worth the price. If you read this commentary with that of A. Moyter, you have a good balance of scholarship and practical application.

Good, but not good enough
I bought this commentary with high hopes. However, after reading over 100 pages I'm returning it for the following reasons.1. It is based on the NIV, which is not a translation I would ever use (for reasons which I won't go into here).2. It is rather difficult to navigate. The chapter headings do indeed indicate the passage under review, but the transition from verse to verse is very difficult to keep track of. This problem is exacerbated by the following one.3. The multitudinous footnotes, some very long, are extremely distracting and make it difficult to maintain continuity in reading. For example, from pages 72 to 94 - a matter of 23 pages - there are 104 footnotes, many of them more than 10 lines.4. The author adopts a somewhat chatty tone, with colloquialisms interspersed. Not what I expect of a serious work on a serious subject.5. There are many instances of misuse of words and even use of the wrong word. For example, "momentarily" is used to mean "in a moment" instead of "for a moment". This may be an increasingly common mistake, but an author who frequently quotes the Greek should know better. Similarly, a footnote on page 102 says, "Although certainty may forever allude us here..." I choked on my coffee at that point. You may think I'm being pedantic, but errors like those cited do make me wonder whether I can trust the rest of what he says. That is just not good enough. And even if Gordon Fee (surprisingly) doesn't know the difference, a proofreader should. It's probably a decent enough commentary, but these concerns make me wonder whether I can trust it.
