This is a great beginner level fly rod and reel
This is a great beginner level fly rod and reel. Also a great loaner! BUT!! THE REEL IS SET UP BACKWARD! The drag is set up to be engaged when you reel IN the line!, not when the line is being pulled out! Simple to change. Take the spool off the reel, using a dental pick or a o-ring hook, take the o-ring off the axil that is holding the gear in place, take the main gear off and flip it over, be sure to put any brass washers that stick to it back on the axil under the gear, put the 0-ring back in place on the axil. There, fixed! I called Eagle Claw, they know about it but haven't been able to get the Chineze to fix the manufacturing problem... not much of a pain for such a cheap but useful rod and reel. I've had a couple for 4 or 5 years and they've seen a lot of use and abuse, still working great.

some decent, some terrible
The rod action is a bit slow in my opinion. The line is quite thick. The flies are a nice touch, but not terribly useful patterns. Biggest gripe is that the reel was set up for right-hand retrieve. Easy fix is to turn the drag gear around, but hard to get the O-ring off to do so.

Ok for beginners
The rod itself is great, but the reel and line are not worth it. Good for beginners, but once you get the hang of it or cast a nicer rod and reel you’ll feel the difference. I would recommend buying just the eagle claw rod and putting a different reel on it.

Nice starter kit
Bought this as my starter kit. Came complete/as advertised and the hat clip was a nice add on. Combo box had line, leader, flies, nail clipper/line clipper, hat clip, rod and reel, and some minimal instruction. Tried it out and decided fly fishing requires all technique and lots of space for that back cast. Oh and practice. Hope to catch some trout next season.
