Product description A doctor investigating the environmental impact of the logging industry find a mutant which is responsible for a series of bizarre deaths. No Track Information AvailableMedia Type: DVDArtist: SHIRE/FOXWORTH/ASSANTETitle: PROPHECYStreet Release Date: 01/08/2002DomesticGenre: HORROR .com John Frankenheimer updates the mutant-monster films of the 1950s with a modern environmental twist in this well-meaning but cliché-ridden late-'70s horror film. Robert Foxworth is so earnest it hurts as a rabble-rousing ghetto doctor who packs up his pregnant wife (Talia Shire) and heads out to the Maine woods to investigate claims of environmental pollution. That's the least of his concerns when a gooey mutant grizzly goes on the rampage and he joins forces with Native American activist Armand Assante (wearing his humorless resolve like war paint) to get out of the woods. Frankenheimer is a good director saddled with a bad, blunt script, and like a pro he delivers the requisite gore and even racks up the tension in a terrific opening chase. But even he can't overcome the clumsiest collection of deformed woodland creatures to claw their way through a monster movie. --Sean Axmaker

Classic 80's Horror
For those of you (like me) that grew up in the 1980's and experienced the horror "boom", this film will bring back pleasant memories of either viewing it at the local drive-in or the town "walk-in" (as we called it in Southern, Oregon). The worst one can do is compare some of these 80's gems to the films of today. The special effects in this film were "cutting edge" when it came out and the themes highly relevant. Post Love Canal, toxic waste was a hot button issue and the enviromentalist movement was hitting its stride. "The Prophecy" took those issues, combined it with a little extra political strife concerning forest clear cutting and the land rights of Native Americans, and made a pretty decent social, horror film.Meter Ratings:Suspense Meter: 6Gross Out Meter: 5Acting Meter: 6Directing Meter: 7Horror Meter: 6Plus 10 Bonus Points for being a classic film that clearly represents the themes of its time. Great to watch with the kids on All Hallow's Eve.

Eco-terror monster movie
John Frankenheimer knows how to thrill movie audiences. He does a fine job with an old-fashioned monster movie in spite of only average FX. Robert Foxworth, Talia Shire and Armand Assante star in this tale about a mutant killer bear that is terrorizing a maine community. Foxworth is a public health official who takes his pregnant wife along on a trip to Maine to investigate birth defects. He lands in the middle of a battle with the paper mill company and the local Native American nation whose people are suffering as a result of the pollution. A series of murders soon lead all to see that there is a 'monster' loose. Myth, fear and denial soon give to facts. The monster movie does have scary moments and has some entertaining moments in spite of a rubbery-looking monster. As a side note, I do remember watching this a double feature with The Sorcerer at the dive-in.

Oozing Backwoods Cheese
Uh-oh...a horror movie with an environmental message? Not really. Instead of nuclear waste being responsible for creating a killer mutant, "Prophecy" lays the blame on plain old mercury. Either way it's just an excuse to get a gooey, pig-bear thing running around the last third of the film offing supporting cast members. "Prophecy" is not a good film. It's clunky, cheesy and at times maybe a little preachy. The monster is goofy (but in this day and age of too much CGI effects, a breath of fresh air), the too hairy cast is laughable. Talia Shire gets her one breakdown moment, just take her speech from "Rocky 3" where she gets all teary eyed screaming at Rock that he "Can't Win", and mangle the words a bit so she is talking about the gooey pig-bear and you get the idea. But for some reason, I found this movie enjoyable, and fun to watch. I think I can trace it back to the standout scene in which a kid tries to run away from the pig-bear while still zipped up in his sleeping bag....that may be the best scene of any horror movie ever!! Truly a laugh out loud moment, and well worth the purchase price alone. If you like your horror films a little on the cheesy side, you won't mind dropping the dough for "Prophecy".

Great monster movie , with an environmental twist.
Great monster movie , with an environmental twist. Robert Foxworth and Talia shire attempt to help a small community of native Americans suffering from illnesses and deformities brought on by pollution. They also have a little monster problem to deal with. It's a fun movie.

No CGI = horror at its best.
I first saw this movie as a child and it scared the living crap outta me. As I grew up and watched many horror movies along the way, this movie always stuck in my head. The way they shot the monster and its movements, especially in the night scenes were just horrifying. I thought this movie was out of print and so I haven't seen the movie since I was a child. I recently bought it on amazon. Even though I'm a 34 yr old man, I still found my self scared and tense the entire movie. I consider this one of my favorite all time movies. I you're not sure about buying it, then find a place to rent it...I guarantee you'll buy it soon after.

Great old horror
This movie is pretty great for the time it was made. When I saw it back when it was at the Drive-in theater and the lighting on it wasn't very good. The scenes in the night were so dark you could barely make anything out. My son and I watched it recently on the DVD I just purchase and even he was impressed with it. And kids these days are kind of hard to impress with our old horror movies. All in all, well worth the money spent on it.

Ecology gone wild
First and foremost, this is a PG-Rated film, but you would not notice due to the level of violence (including a decapitation) that is on view. Secondly, this is a film about saving our ecology, and how mercury dumped into the river system by a lumber company has produced mutant creatures; the most deadly being a giant mutant bear. Sure, the film is cheesy, but it is also entertaining and worth the price of the DVD. It is also in the original aspect ratio and has never looked better. Just put your brain in neutral and go along for the ride.

Minor monster movie has its moments
John Frankenheimer directs. Mutant bear monster on the loose. Not too bad. If you are in the mood for a "serious" , if a bit portentous monster film, this is more than OK
