Great read! Dr. Vincent has a unique way of making the music come alive.I was so excited about what I was learning that I purchased a copy of his books for my mother! You won’t be disappointed

A very engaging read and a most welcome addition to the literature. There is little available on this subject and this book takes a focused thesis and puts it in clear context. Dr. Vincent has a very readable style. He's coming from a personal background and perspective that is his own, yet it seems readily shared. In addition to the focus on the Lumpen, this is also a valuable read for anyone interested in the civil rights movement. This is a great book. Highly recommended. (However, Dr. Vincent, "Land of 1,000 Dances" is not a Wilson Pickett song (even though he had a hit with it), it's a Chris Kenner song).

As someone who was personally involved with the issues and times this book addresses, I can tell you that the author and his interviewees offer a remarkable window into the revolution that took place around the music and politics of the era and location. My viewpoint was from Chicago and LA, but the book makes a great argument for the potency of the Bay Area at the time. Highly recommended!
