Hearty, Smoky, Rich & Delicious! Make this part of your daily routine!
I eat a lot of canned fish. I love the convenience of it as a nutritious guilt-free mid-day/evening snack. I look forward to coming home after work and popping open (also easy open lid, awesome) a can right out of the cupboard. Bar Harbor has become my go-to for Smoked Kippers, and one of the things I love most about it is the size of the can. This is 6.7 Ounces! That is a lot of fish, and they are able to fit meaty substantial filets in there because of it. It is the perfect size to complement a salad or some bread to round out a meal. Or as a snack, I eat it on toast with capers, mustard and pepper, sometimes together or each apart. It is savory, smoky and splendid. BPA free cans are critical when eating canned fish regularly. These have become a staple in my kitchen. I buy 12 cans every 4 weeks, and plan to do so for the indefinite future.

These did not disappoint.
I first ate sardines as a kid. My Dad had them all the time - snacks while watching football, Friday nights when his friends were over for poker. They were a staple on our family camping trips. I liked them then and I like them now although until recently I didn't eat them as much as I used to. I keep a can or two in the pantry and enjoy them now and then. Recently, I went to a gourmet food store and found Bar Harbor All Natural Smokes Wild Kippers. They were on sale so I bought a couple of cans. UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE! Comparing these to the regular sardines I grew up with is like comparing a 10 year old Kia to a brand new Lexus. The Bar Harbors are absolutely delicious! I just served these as an appetizer to some friends I had over for a BBQ. I opened a few cans and put the fish in the middle of a serving plate and surrounded it with a variety of crackers. My guests thought this was some kind of expensive imported smoked fish, they loved it and it disappeared quickly. If you have ever had sardines and enjoyed them then you will be extremely happy with these. It is hard to get over to that little gourmet grocery all the time, so I am very very very happy that I can order these on Amazon - and at a great price. Yes, Amazon's price is less than I pay at the gourmet store.

Pretty Darn Good
There are probably better canned kippers out there but I can’t afford them and I doubt that I could tell the difference. I have tried many brands, and Bar Harbor are the best of the “premium” brands. Nice size, firm, and not oily. My search is over - get ‘um, they are tasty.

A staple for me.
I believe that Bar Harbor Wild Smoked Kippers are the best canned smoked fish I have ever had. the can is relatively easy to open, filets keep their shape, I am convinced that they have exceptional nutritional value, and I think they are yummy! I often open a can, drain (and drink or save) the juice, and squirt in some horseradish mustard or just plain horseradish and maybe add cut-up pickled okra or olive salad or green chili (for example), and eat most of a can in one sitting. It is plenty of protein for a meal...or 2! I try to always have them on hand. I am a 74-year-old woman, 5'3" and 123 lbs. I have arthritis in my thumbs so sometimes have to grab the pull tab with a cloth or napkin.

Two ingredients - Just herring and salt.
This seems so rare nowadays.

I did not ultimately enjoy these kippers. : ( I had once relished TJ's smoked kippers (my favorites in texture, flavor, and smell), until I realized that they had been swimming in canola oil all along and I had not noticed. I had not found any kippers to substitute my favorites that I really felt good about until I came across these Harbor Bay kippers, which are also naturally smoked (not smoke flavored), and I liked that they are simply packed in a tiny bit of water. however, the filets are so very limp, mushy, slimy, and gritty, with chunks of...salt? to be found and crunched through randomly. the filets are also skin on and have bits of fin still on them. they are very pungently fishy, reminding me of a scandinavian delicacy that consists of fish left to ferment for months in a pail (no, I have never tried it--but the smell and flavor of these kippers certainly reminds me of what I imagined that fermented fish to taste like through my tv screen). I ate two tins with a lovely mustard from TJ's that much improved them: Trader Joes Mustard Miscellany Gift Set: Provencal; Blackcurrant; Chablis; Basil upon opening the third tin, though, these kippers began to go downhill, and I began finding stringier and slimier bits in the tins, found them to be mushier and mushier, and also found I no longer found the smell in the slightest bit novel. I gave these a chance and was very positive at first, but they did not grow on me, but rather...shrunk on me?. if you are a fan of anything I am describing, I recommend having them with a nice mustard, particular the TJ's assortment I shared, if you can find any past the holidays (it is lovely with sardines or made into salad dressings). in my opinion, though, these kippers may be up there with the best quality, most natural, and healthiest, but they do not win any prizes in taste, smell or texture. I truly wanted to love these and apologize to bar harbor for my negative review, but these are just not what I was expecting at all. : (
