I am a beginner at cake decorating. This was a birthday gift from my son but sadly the container it came in and will store the pieces in already had a corner broke off when I opened it. Today I decorated my first cake and I really did like the decorating bag. Quality bag, easy to use and easy to clean.

I grew up wishing I could eat all the beautiful stuff I saw on TV. Now, I can make them myself! I haven't done any royal frosting decorations but buttercream has been wonderful to work with with these tools. My only complaint is that there are so many tips but only one couple and one bag. After knowing that I am using the item as often as I hoped, I quickly remedied that by couplers (a few dollars for 4 at Michaels -- I got the Wilton kind) and disposable bags. The tips are slightly fragile; one of the tips got damaged by a careless roommate. But I was also able to fix it, so that goes two ways. The bag is medium sized and I find myself refilling it halfway through to finish a cake. It has a waxy coating that prevents most staining but I work with a lot of cocoa and there is some discoloration. This set has a variety of shapes and it was helpful for me to experiment with different kinds of styles. Now I'm starting to wish that there was a variety in size but I think it means I'm ready to buy more tips. Still, this is a great starter set. It's helped me impress family, friends, and coworkers.

This item it’s easy to use as a beginner

We decided to bake homemade for our son's birthday party this year, and since we decided on cupcakes it was essential to have a decorating set. My husband and I both enjoyed using this set. It comes with 12 stainless steel tips which was a godsend to us since we were unable to clean them right away. When you open the packaging the cardboard supporting the tips shows examples of the different uses for the various tips. That was very helpful since we had no idea what we were doing. We played around a bit with different looks until we found what we were looking for. I believe we used the 30 tip the most for the cupcakes. The only problems we came across had to do with packaging. As nice as it is to have a container for the tips, I wish there was a better way to organize them. For example, when you open the packaging it is pretty and organized. The tips come through the cardboard from the bottom, but when you want to pull one out you have to pull all of them out and the cardboard. It gets really messy and hard to put back together. As that issue is minor and does not affect the way the product works, it gets five stars. It was very easy to use and professional quality.

I teach cake decorating, and I provide equipment for in-class use so that students don't spend a lot of money before they find out whether or not they even like decorating cakes. The tip assortment is just right for students, and the set is an excellent value for the money spent. The sturdy plastic box is a bonus. I own several other Ateco products and have always found the quality to be very high. As much as I like the tips, though, I'm not terribly impressed with the coupler and bag. I use inexpensive Wilton couplers and disposable bags for my classes, and they work quite well. It's a matter of what you're used to, I think. I highly recommend this set for anyone who's just starting out and wants a good basic assortment of tips. If you're more experienced and are looking for something a bit larger, Ateco has larger sets as well.
