is this an alternative to the up walker?

If you are referring to the U-step walker then I would say 'not exactly'. The Vive walker does not have the same features as the u-step, however, if you need a compact, folding walker with a comfortable seat and versatile utility then the Vive fits the bill. The Vive will adequately negotiate curbs and small steps but does not have the roller system of the U-step. I would like to see the Vive add a few inches to the handle height, a brake lock would be useful too. Overall we are very satisfied with the Vive primarily due to it's portability and ease of use.

Overall weight of this walker? reviews state different weights?

After long experimentations, the Vive 4 wheel medical rolling Walker is tough to weigh on a bathroom scale, the weight including the bag is 16.9 pounds. I hope that this information helps to make a decision.

From side to side 17 inches. Front to back 10 inches
