Grandson is trains mad, bought this so he could have a book related to real trains. It has much technical details, good images, as well a background. Grandson thins it great and he is only 5yrs old. Its for me really/

...tells you pretty much all you need to know about the game changer. A classic design as is reflected by almost every high speed rail link in the world. The first scheduled 125mph service in regular service. I was sad to see them slip from Mainline service but they live on in many guises and continue to turn in sterling service where ever they operate. The book opens you eyes to the who what and where of this classic light-weight high speed locomotive. With all the switch gear laid out and with enough time to understand it all you could pretty much drive a 125 down the metals. As ever with Haynes all the info is well illustrated and readably presented. If you are a HST125 fan this is THE book for you.

As someone who worked on the repair and maintenance of these trains for over 35 year's it is good to see a publication about this iconic train.

A host of detail about the design that was intended to be a short-lived stop gap and is still in service over 50 years later. It revolutionized UK rail travel and gave it a success that the present UK rail operators have plundered.

An excellent very detailed book! Many illustrations and descriptions of the cab as well as other areas of the locomotive. HOWEVER, as TYPICAL-AMAZON CONTINUES TO THRYIT IN A PADDED ENVELOPE with NO PROTECTION. THUS IT GET THROWN AROUND AND DAMAGES THE 4 corners of a nice book. I’m thinking I’ll get book from Barnes & Nobel. Maybe a bit more but in store I can see if it’s damaged. OR (!!) when B & N SHIPS A BOOK, it’s WELL PROTECTED!!!!

Really an excellent book!

Considering the popularity of heritage rail in the UK, I'm rather surprised that Haynes has only published a few locomotive "manuals" so far. This is the first one to cover a train still in widespread service, and the most detailed and stripped down to date. Except for a brief introduction describing the need for a new high-speed locomotive in the late 60s, this is, for the most part, a technical study of the type. The largest chapter is an illustrated technical description/walkthrough of a typical power car, followed by a chapter on maintenance and overhauls. These are followed by chapters written by a former IC125 driver and Technical Riding Inspector, and a chapter describing all of the upgrades the trains have received since entering service. Curious about what every control and gauge in the driver's cab does, the function of every circuit breaker in the clean air compartment, the engine's firing order, or how the bring the train into service? You'll learn here. You'll also learn how each maintenance exam (from A to G) is carried out, get pointers on how to properly apply the brakes, and what a BPPCU, TDR, AWS/TPWS, and ETS are. There's also plenty of color photographs , showing the guts of the locomotive and its myriad components in all their grimy, oily glory. A number of appendixes are provided, including technical specifications, livery changes, and the name and number of every power car. Although it's definitely the most detailed train book Haynes has published to date, the level of detail does lower its readability somewhat. The acronyms can get rather confusing without a glossary, the chapter written by a TRI features a bewildering number of route and power car numbers, and while there's a huge number of photographs, there are very few diagrams. I enjoyed reading this, but it's definitely more for the hardcore modern locomotive buff than for people "just interested in trains."
