Will this screw directly onto an existing rectangle elec box?

Yes, it will fit the existing thermostat electrical junction box 📦. We had no problem other than a slight bit of adjustment to make it look 👀 perfect. We have had no problems and it looks much better than the Google Plastic Fixture.

Does this come with screws?

No, it works with the screws provided with the Nest.

Does the “Bronze” faceplate match the “gold” Nest thermostat?

I purchased the bronze Nest and the silver Nest. I purchased the bronze plate to match the bronze Nest. It looks great with the bronze Nest and looks just ok with the silver Nest. I can't say how it would look with the gold Nest. I would recommend getting the plate that matches. If you are able to find the bronze Nest and plate, you will love it!

Can the metal plate adapter from nest be used with this? Our thermostat had a plastic electrical box that I have to use the metal plate to mount to it

This plate is meant to be placed flush with the wall, I do not believe that it would work with the adapter you are referring to. We do have a plastic version that has a hull that would work with this adapter.
