Will this work with split phase 240 VAC 60hz to switch from grid to an inverter when grid is down?

yes. You can run anything up to and including 690vac though these. the coil will work with 240vac. 60hz no problem. Not sure what type of inverter you are using. But any Inverter/Charger already has a change over switch built in. I use these for "Anti-Islanding" when there is more than one source able to be used to charge and inverter bank.

Can anyone say if it 100 amper one phase or 100amp combined ? e.g. each 400v line can handle 100 amp each or combine over 400x4

It's my pleasure to answer your question, I think it's 100 amper line/phase since it is the current handled by contactors/circuit-breakers that it has on each side.And it is suitable for the emergency power supply system with 50 or 60 Hz alternatting current rated 400V.
