BEST king movie, no horror flick here. This is a great DRAMA
Kathy Bates. We all know who she is. She starred in the classic movie misery as a mentally distured nurse and fan of her favorite writer whom she rescues and then he is help captive in her home. But Dolores Claiborne is different. It's a story about a maid(bates) who is accused of murder for the second time, first it was her husband, then her employer (Vira Donovon) who she had worked for for many years and then became her caregiver. It's a myserty/drama and a very enjoyable film even though there are some dark moments when Dolores is having flashbacks of her alcoholic abusive husband, and her daughter who she tried to protect. Vira Donovon makes the movie special because not only is her acting oscar worthy but her character is very likeable even though she appears to be a rich bitch at the beginning, but as you get to know her character you realize she's a good person, but just doesn't take crap from anyone. So is dolores claiborne, and it's really about women. How women are treated and these two women became such good friends because not only were they alike, but they had some similar problems. It's about friendship, female bonding, and what can i say GIRLPOWER! Being tough, but doing what's right. Being a good person but learning from your mistakes. Looking out for yourself, but help others every once and a while. And never judge a book by it's cover. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays selena st george, dolores's daughter who has emotional problems and is unstable but we all find out why. This movie is underated. Maybe many of you think it's about hating men, but not really. It just focus's on women and their strength and weaknesses, and sometimes doing the wrong thing for the right reason. Dolore's husband is suppose to be an unpleasant character and you can't help but not like him at all. And everyone has the right to defend themselves and their children. No one should take that. And even if you provoke someone, you can't make anyone do anything they don't wanna do. Bottom line is, self defense is self defense. It reminds me of EYE FOR AN EYE with sally field. In real life, Cops can set up a sting, and go undercover and provoke people, but if you commit a crime you go to jail. You're responsible for your own actions. If someone intends to do you bodily harm, you have the right to defend yourself, and your children. It's justifiable homicide. This movie, dolores claiborne is thought provoking, and focus's on some important issue's. It's just a movie and it can make you feel good because no woman should ever have to accept a husband like joe. That isn't love, and it sickens me that women protect their husbands no matter what they do to your kids or them, but no one should let that happen. First accept that the sitation needs to stop, but by stopping it, you have to make hard choices. And that's what this movie is about.

Dolores Claiborne Refuses to be a Victim
Kathy Bates is riveting as the abused wife of an alcoholic, pedophile who is grooming their daughter. As Dolores, she stands up to him, at one point, after he hit her kidney area with a log, cracking a milk jug over his head and brandishing a hatchet or broad axe and telling him she'll kill him if he ever hits her again. This works for a long time but she also has to deal with her 13-year-old daughter's distress over her father's attempts to assault her. Dolores' normally uncaring employer, Vera, surprises her with sympathy and a plan to get rid of the husband whom she claims will never let Dolores leave. The acting is superb and the bleak setting on an island off the Maine coast is a perfect backdrop to Dolores' many trials and miseries.

What IS the most important thing to know?
This is a fine film great performances all around, even Mr. Riley who is young and thin here does good work. But... i have an odd criticism. The incest scenes are rather erotic. Now they are meant to be repelling, disgusiting in showing the preditory nature of this father, how he uses the good things ( this belonged to my mother). to seduce his daughter sexually and emotionally. But the sex scene on the boot, the actor - who I quite like from 'LA Confidential' to 'the Expanse' and many points between - plays his scene of the daughter touching him with the sounds of .. arousal. And I thought we all could do without this part of the film. it has long disturbed me, that is might arouse preditory men more than shame them.. Dolores Claiborne is a rough subject, sad and torn and played so well by everyone. the Ungroomed young woman, cynical and angry. a mother who lives half a life. I guess it is a bold brave thing, to show the impact of incest on everyone, including the (thankfully) dead dad.

As good as the book
A Stephen King movie at its best. It handled intergenerational trauma intensely yet tenderly and all of the actors in this movie, all of them, did a fantastic job bringing his characters to life.
