Ophelia [DVD]

I wanted to love this movie
I'm really not sure why this movie was made. I get that it is supposed to be a flipped up re-telling of Hamlet taking Ophelia's character and making her what? More of a powerful female character? The problem I have with movies like this though is this....it is not how her character is. It is a re-imagining of what her character completely which totally changes the story making it something it was never intended to be. It even has a totally different outcome for Ophelia...so why do it?I watched this movie with my son who kept asking me questions throughout it because he was confused. In my mind it would have been one thing to take Ophelia's character and make her a stronger female, less mousy and more assertive....but to totally change the story of Hamlet where she is a key character? Nope. This story simply wasn't strong enough for that.Speaking of strong enough. This movie had some pretty strong players in it such as Naomi Watts and Clive Owen and I found both of them to be just...."meh".While this is a "pretty" movie (the scenery and costumes are beautiful) I can't say I'd recommend it. I found it slow, boring, and not a good re-imagining of this very well known story.

Ophelia tells her side and she’s not crazy.
Hamlet told through Ophelia’s eyes—bold and beautiful with stunning performances by Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts, the script a clever and fearless rewriting of the Bard: “Now, remember; keep your own counsel. Don't be familiar or vulgar. And don't fight; or if you do, win. Dress well, but don't spend too much. Don't borrow any money or lend it. And above all, be true to yourself.” You don’t need to be a Shakespearean scholar to appreciate this feminist take.

Don't listen to nay-sayers! Absolutely worth a watch!!!
This movie is utterly brilliant from the acting to the costuming to the cinematography. Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts especially stand out with their performances. This proves as a unique and compelling "companion" piece to the classic Hamlet—basically, think of Shakespeare's Hamlet as the public story, as only things onlookers would've witnessed and Ophelia as the story told from the perspective of someone inside it all. Almost as if you get to see what happens when the characters are "offstage" in the play in addition to the main story points and notable quotes. The movie mostly gets it's mixed reviews from those who think this is just a remake of Hamlet for feminists instead of an enhancement to the story you know. There are a few small differences but those near the end are my favorite parts. If you're remotely curious, give it a watch and form an opinion for yourself.

Wow!
This is the best movie I've seen in an awfully long time. The author really knew her Shakespeare. Without altering Hamlet (much) she filled in back stories of characters we hardly knew in the original. She also added in a little Romeo and Juliet and added a Macbethian witch. The dialogue was in keeping with Shakespeare, altered and updated only slightly. Love that the story took a sympathetic view of poor, greatly maligned Polonius when written from Ophelia's point of view.I'd like to add that the acting was absolutely superb. The sets amazing. The cinematography was beautiful. The choreography fun. The music beautul.Damn, this is a a shockingly good film. I highly recommend it for any Shakespeare fan!

Enjoyable Watch
I've never studied Shakespeare or watched very many plays or renditions of his work. Other Hamlet productions have put me to sleep. Long ago I watched the Romeo and Juliet movie. I've also seen some quirky redos at the Ashland, Oregon Shakespeare Festival - old plays turned into modern settings. For those of us not taking literature courses or required to write a 10-page interpretation of the great writer's works, I find new adaptations enjoyable when they become more relatable and understood. This particular one told through Ophelia's eyes is tragically beautiful in its own right. From the settings, costumes, and acting, I found no fault in the production. Thoroughly enjoyable, leaving me a bit weepy eyed at the tragedy of it all. If you're not a Shakespeare purist who will be offended, you might enjoy this new remake of an old story. Thanks William! You're the best when it comes come tragedy, comedy, and love.

Alternate Universe Hamlet
If you're not expecting Hamlet at all, you won't be disappointed. I'm not sure how I feel about that as someone who has always loved Shakespeare. Could this movie had stood on its own as the completely different story it is? I think so. But Hamlet told through the eyes of Ophelia, which is what I was actually hoping for, it definitely is not. It merely borrows the Bard's names. It's a pretty film but not a great film despite what should have been a strong cast. The costuming, however, was to die for.

Wonderful perspective
The costuming and cast in this is fantastic as well as the cinematography and location. I personally loved seeing the story from Ophelia's perspective and the motives behind her goals. I also thought Naomi Watts was STELLAR in this especially playing the two roles. Really loved it! Some may say it's a bit slow but I think it keeps a well-thought out pace before picking up right at the end, as it should.

Great film
Great film, the costumes and imagery are a delight. Great story from Ophelia’s point of view. Daisy is great as the leading lady.Highly entertaining and recommend.

An imaginative feast for the eyes.
You’re not going to find a traditional Shakespeare tale here but what you do get is a visually stunning slightly more abstract take on a heroine that must quietly use her evident but rarely emphasised wits to get by. The film is more of an artistic production with a strong Pre-Raphaelite design and even if the plot isn’t especially standout, I find it very compelling in its own way.
