Just received my Ferro rod with survival whistle and ferro rod striker. I used it immediately to start a fire in the fireplace. I placed cedar shavings in a pile on top of a small piece of oak bark. Then used the striker to scrape the black coating off and get to the ferrocerium. It threw some really nice sparks that started an ember on a piece of charwood I made a month ago. Placed the charwood inside the cedar shavings and blew the ember into a flame. Added twigs from the yard to the flames and a minute later had a good fire going until I could add some logs. I like the 550 paracord lanyard attached to the ferro rod, and the scraper has a bottle opener cut into it. The survival whistle has 3 notes when you blow into it. It's the same whistle that Tops Knives send with there products. All in all, a great buy.

I've used many magnesium rods but this one is by far the best one on the market it is hard enough to where you can use the back of your knife to scrape shavings off and if you add a little bit more pressure you will get a ton of Sparks I have two knives at home one beat up knife that has such a bad edge on it I will not take it to the field but that one can throw sparks with with no problem the other one cannot throw sparks with because of the spine The striker that came with it works awesome it throws a lot of sparks without putting much effort into it and the whistle works very well all in all it's a great package I would recommend this to anyone who wants a nice magnesium rod

This is a combination Ferro Rod Firestarter with a flat plastic signaling whistle. It looks just like the Amazon photos.The Ferro Rod states that it's good for 30,000 strikes. It's fairly thick. The included metal Striker does work, and also doubles as a short ruler and a bottle opener, but it's a stretch to call this a 6-in-1 device.The Striker is not my favorite design. It does work with some persistence, but it's not the most efficient design. And for this price ($16 currently) it's in direct competition with the excellent 'Light My Fire' and other famous name brand Firestarters which have good and well earned reputations.The flat plastic whistle will fit in a shirt pocket and does put out a pretty good level of sound. Perfectly adequate for signaling, and takes up no space in a pocket or attached to a backpack strap.Lightweight and compact. Weighs 133 grams.
