The Clock Repairer's Handbook [Penman, Laurie] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Clock Repairer's Handbook Review: The joy of discovery - This is not a " first read" book on clock repair. I purchased it because I had exhausted all of my reading material and none of it would move me forward. I would go through my repair process flawlessly( how one knows this is a matter of experience and theory & trust, I guess) and I would have no idea on how to proceed. Extremely frustrating but getting help is called for if you've come to end of your ability. So---i bought this book and really had no faith in it. I had read some of the free samples. However, I jumped into the book at a particular area that I knew had to be a possible problem area. The escapement. What I found was a wealth of information that wowed me. I had intuitively been pondering many of the facts I encountered but had been unable to put it all together & it was a Eureka moment. All my learning materials (books, videos, YouTube, etc. Along with experience) had none of the theory ( not formulas, etc.- but getting to know your subject stuff, fun stuff but, theory) that I needed to move forward. This book was worth the price for even one page.. A gain, not the 1st book a beginner should read but, when you are ready it's informative and relevant and worth much more than a few bucks. For what it's worth. Review: Nice comprehensive book. - I am amassing a fair collection of books on clock and watch repair as I jump deeply into a hobby I began years ago. I feel this book is more suited for the serious amateur and professional. It is the most comprehensive book on the topic in my library. The text is clear, easy to read and the topics are explained well. There are plenty of clear illustrations that compliment the text. While I claim that the book is best suited to a serious clock enthusiast, the author does not assume any significant prior knowledge on the part of the reader. A beginner will also find much to their liking in this book. I highly recommend this book, and will soon be adding additional books from this author to my library. DRW

The joy of discovery

Good information
The book is ok, not as easy-to-use as I had hoped.

Absolutely NOT for the absolute beginner.
Very high level technical book. I recently inherited my grandfather’s grandfather clock and, being mechanically inclined, I want to be able to maintain the clock myself. I’m quite confident that this book would be beneficial to someone who has a fair amount of experience with mechanical clocks. If, like me, you never worked on an older clock, this book may not be as useful as you might think. I took off 2 stars because the book’s description intimated this is for experienced as well as the “absolute beginner “. It is not. I’ll keep it because I’m sure that sometime in the future it will be useful.

A gift for my husband. Very useful
we have grandfather clocks, cuckoo clocks and other old clocks. Our service man is retiring and it is difficult to find someone who can come to the house these days. So my husband who is quite handy will be taking over the duties. THis will be his aide.

The author did a great job
The first chapter of the book is a trouble shooting guide for the most common problems, so you don't have to read the entire book before you bother to look at the clock. The rest of the book is informative and easy to follow, but I really appreciate the first chapter.

Clock Repair for Craftsmen
This little book is a bounty of clock repair approach and technique for the thoughtful reader. It does require some effort to read and understand. That effort will be rewarded if you're seriously interested in old mechanical clocks (which in itself is an anachronistic effort, rewarded with regular ticking and melodious chimes) In 50 years, all the experience and mastery of this handbook will be lost to time, as clock repair and those who make a living at it go the way of buggy whip manufacturers...

This is not for the faint at heart
Kind of wish I hadn't taken this one on, it's written 100% in clock maker/repairman language with no quarter given to the lay person, I am a retired repair tech my self and yet no matter how hard I try, I have no clue what I am reading so at this point I have to find a repairman willing to help me sort things out because without a guide the endeavor is futile

Both Clock Books, Watch and Keyboard dust cover received in VG condition and in the time frame specified. Have yet to receive the Repair Magnifier and the Digital Alarm. 'Am impressed with the information presentation and diagrams in each book.

The book contains all the information I need to help me to build a skeleton clock. Having built a weight driven clock the book has helped me to understand how the escapement works. The glossary was especially useful in learning the words that are specific to clock makers. The books describes how clocks work which clock builders' manuals don't always do. The book is very useful for an amateur clock builder.

A very useful book if you want to fix a clock. It's chalked full of interesting, useful information. Information on how to fix a clock right. It even deals with how to grind the metal and make parts. It's really serious.
