Limited double 180gm audiophile vinyl LP repressing of this album by the Manchester Post-Punk icons featuring the original Peter Saville designed packaging. 1981's Still is a compilation of non-album tracks, outtakes, and the complete performance of the band's last show. Featuring "Dead Souls" and "Something Must Break", this deluxe release is packaged in a replica of the original hessian sleeve. Originally named Warsaw, the band consisted of singer Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris. Formed by Sumner and Hook right after they attended a Sex Pistols gig, Joy Division transcended their punk roots to develop a sound and style that made them one of the pioneers of the Post-Punk movement. In May 1980, on the eve of the band's debut American tour, Curtis, aged 23, committed suicide. After Curtis's death, the remaining members continued as New Order, achieving critical and commercial success. Today Joy Division are seen as one of the most influential bands of the late 1970s.

"Still" Great
At the end of Grant Gee's documentary "Joy Division," there is a great line -- "The albums are 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Closer,' and everything else is just memory merchandising" -- and I suppose this album falls into the category of the latter. I bought the double LP "Still" as a 14-year-old in 1985 looking for new musical horizons. The covers of the aforementioned albums looked really cool sitting in the record bins, but this one had twice the music for the same price (hey, guess I was cheap then too). Listening to it made an immediate impression. The outtakes that comprised record one flowed together well enough to make its own album, with the exception of (the cover of) "Sister Ray" which was all its own kind of magic. The second record was an amazing window into a live experience that never made it to the U.S. because of Ian Curtis' suicide. In the years to come, I would further appreciate comparing studio versions, with Martin Hannett's brilliant yet pervasive production, to the raw power of the same songs stripped bare in concert performance -- "Isolation" being the textbook example, so different yet both editions equally essential. Watching Gee's film and Anton Corbijn's "Closer" recently made me yearn to order "Still" on CD, so I did. Sure, it is most definitely memory, but sorry, it is Still so much more than just merchandising.

A Great Collection
Arrived in decent condition, and well before the expected date; nice, speedy delivery. Unfortunately, one of the best tracks, "New Dawn Fades, " skips. That's the one shame. This Joy Division collection is the one recording with a kick-ass version of "The Kill. " This track is the reason I purchased Still. This version of "The Kill" is completely different from "The Kill" off of the Warsaw LP. Other great tracks include "Ice Age" and "Walked In Line. " There's also a 9+ minute live cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray."Unfortunately, the CD does not include another of my favorite Joy Division songs, "24 Hours;" the cassette does contain this track, if you happen to find it.
