This is the one to get
It is smaller than you imagine, fits in palm of a small hand. The screen backlight is nice and bright and you can turn it on or off and play in the dark easily.Easy to learn menu and how it works. For a cheap chess device (as well as connect four and checkers), this is the one to get.I had read other reviews and was worried it would not work or break.Needs a small screwdriver to open the back and 2 AAA batteries are needed (does not come with them). My 7 year old son can use it and loves it. My goal was to get a non-internet device for him to use that would not count as device time.In addition, it was level 1-20 for difficult if playing against computer and 2 player mode. Level 1 is very easy. I have not tried the harder levels. It will also give you hints in both 1 player and 2 player mode to help learn. Great for kids and beginners.I'm hoping it lasts and if it doesn't, will definitely buy another one of these.

Chess pocket computer.
Almost perfect. Only complaint is that the pieces are hard to distinguish. Hard to believe the efficacy of the small size. I hope it never "dies".

You Can Do Better...and I have your solution! (Use a discarded smart phone instead!)
I'm reviewing this as a 50 year chess player (ELO about 1400-1600). I collect electronic chess computers and wanted to add this to my collection. My first impressions were very positive. I love the compact size, the bright screen and the menu system. The pieces (graphics) are greatly limited due to the LCD and is inferior to the dot matrix graphics we find on our smart phones today, so some will find it difficult to distinguish between the chess men. Others familiar with this limitation will be able to enjoy it anyway. That's the good. Now on to the bad. The first of 20 levels was unbeatable even for me, so I think kids new to chess will be discouraged. IMO, I think a 20-level chess computer should start out on a very beatable level in order to encourage newbies to move on to the higher levels rather than give up in the beginning. Next, hey - it's 2023 for heaven's sake! No chess computer today should EVER take over a minute on level 1 to make a move!!! This is a deal-breaker for me. The processor must be ancient in this thing! I also noticed (as did another reviewer) that there seems to be no difference between levels. So...if you enjoy waiting a lot, you'll want this!THE SOLUTION: Don't buy this or anything that looks like it! Go dig up one of your old smartphones, buy a new battery for it if it needs one, and go online with it and download any of the many chess games available for it and make it your new portable chess computer! You don't even need to have an active phone account because you're just using your home wifi. I recommend "Chess Genius" for $5! The levels are fantastic. It has beautiful and customizable color graphics. You can save and review games and have Chess Genius analyze them. Every old deactivated smartphone can still be a portable chess computer/calculator and camera! And because you will be playing a downloaded chess game, you can play it anywhere...no internet connection needed! I have an old smart phone and I use it just for chess! It has many different chess programs downloaded, so I have a wonderful collection. My pictures below show this unit compared to quarters and my hand for size reference, and one picture is of my old smart phone with Chess Genius on it. What a difference!

Awesome game!!! Love it!!
This game is awesome. It has several levels of difficulty that progress as you learn. If you are playing a game and have to turn it off in the middle it will start back up at the same place when you turn it back on. It has 4 extra games. The screen is backlit. It has a tutorial for playing chess.
