Does this use the same wood handle as the coldsteel war hammer?

Yes and no. I have replaced mine with a war hammer handle with no Ill effects. However, the stock handle is shaped a little differently. The war hammer handle is a perfect oval, where the tomahawk handles are thicker on the side that touches the palm, and thinner towards the fingers to aid in edge alignment. If you put the war handle on, there will be a small gap in the axe head

could i use this as a tool for bushcraft type activities as well as self defence?

There are others that do better as a tool. This however, will suffice as a tool. The main purpose of this is a weapon.
