Emille Gallé was one of the great names of the Art Nouveau movement in France, and founder of the famous École de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases. Following the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie, his work is characterised by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; and panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers. This important book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the pieces uniques that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time. Written by Decorative Arts specialist Alastair Duncan, Gallé Furniture documents the history of Gallé's furniture production from his favourite motifs to the ways in which he used furniture design to express his social and political ideals. Duncan includes an encyclopedic range of models created in the Gallé Workshops both during and after his lifetime. Beautifully illustrated, and containing translations of Gallé's 'Notes to the Juries' of the World Expositions, this stunning publication will leave the reader captivated by this remarkable expression of the new art that changed the European aesthetic forever. Forthcoming: Gallé Lamps ISBN: 9781851496716 Review: Great book - Galle is known for his glassware, but he made amazing furniture as well. I always had trouble finding photos of his furniture in other books. That is not a problem now, this new book seems to have photos of every piece of furniture ever made by Galle. Often the author shows a black and white period photo next to a color photo of the surviving piece. The size and quality of the book are as good as it gets. This is the definitive reference work on Galle's furniture. Page after page of amazing marquetry gave me many hours of viewing pleasure. The text is serious as well, the author is a professional. Highly recommended. Review: The Definitive Work - If your passion is Art Nouveau and/or the decorative arts this would be a great addition to your library. I can't imagine a museum, with a collection covering the decorative arts, not possessing a copy. It is a thorough treatment of the subject with a beautiful selection of contemporary and vintage photos. This book would also appeal to anyone practicing or interested in marquetry. The furniture designs are spectacular. I must admit I only thought of Galle in connection with his work in glass. This book gave me a whole new appreciation for the man's genius.

A Lovely and Scholarly Book For Galle Lovers
I received this book as a gift a while ago, and have finally finished reading it and enjoying the marvelous photos. For the Galle lover, or lover of Art Nouveau or French decorative art from the 1880's into the first two decades of the 20th century, this book is a gem. It is filled with excellent old and new photos which show the many furniture designs and amazing marquetry skills of Emil Galle, which were the hallmark of the large body of pieces he designed. Fortunately, many pieces still survive and can be collected and appreciated by those who can afford them. The photos and well written text by Alastair Duncan, the highly regarded Art Nouveau and Art Deco authority, blend together perfectly and the book is very well organized. This sizable book is both visually appealing and educational as a reference guide for the beginning or advanced Galle collector or student. I'm happy to add this to other books I own by Mr. Duncan on Art Deco and Art Nouveau topics. This is a practical and very attractive book that would be at home on an antique or modern coffee table, or in a library's fine art reference section. I am considering giving copies as holiday gifts to two of my close collector friends, who I am sure would be love to have this book in their reference libraries. A five star book in my opinion, and thanks to Amazon for what I feel also to be a very fair price.

Great overview of Galle furniture
Good photos but I wish they had more detail of the marquetry. Unfortunately there is not much information with the photos such as dimensions or types of wood used. The photos are great for design inspiration!

Livro Maravilhoso.
