Oh my goodness! Why didn't this get the Caldecott?!
The research for details in clothing, tipis, indigenous North American everything from Once Upon A Time is evident. The story takes one to a different time and place. The artwork is unique and wonderful: emphasis on the "wonder." There is one picture especially, in this book, I will be looking at forever to find hidden things: novel idea for the moment in the story and extremely creative!!!! Thank goodness for a Cinderella story for what one is on the INSIDE!! Women, put down your glossy magazines and pick up this book!!! And then curtail eating disorders stemming from the harmful affects of media model stereotypes!!! Study this story, girls, and meditate on it wisely. I am an adult woman and am enjoying this paperback book: it arrived safely, packaging was stable, and item was not bent in any way in the delivery.

more like a 4.5
more like a 4.5 but it's amazing! I would like to warn readers that I am a teenager with no children or siblings who are young enough to appreciate picture books. Additionally I don't babysit that often anymore because I have work. So why did I buy this? I bought this because I need a fairy tale. A tale where the heroine or hero has every negative thing thrown at them but they find the light and overcome. Where the greatest evils are defeated by a greater good. That's what I need. And sometimes children's books and fairy tales provide the most realistic picture of what our life could be like here on earth or to come if we stay good. So my review will mostly be based upon how well it portrays that message.Art: very beautiful, but also dark at some parts. Cinderella's eyes literally look like black sockets sometimes. But it is very beautiful and well done. Some pictures take your breath away.Story: I LOVE IT!!! It is one of my fave!!! I love how cinderella is so strong and brave! She's very kind and sweet yet knows how to stand up for herself. She is the ONLY one who can see the prince and she knows it. And even though she doesn't have as much to offer she does whatever it takes to get what she wants. She's hard-working and I love her. Also it is very romantic how they meetMoral: very good moral. A moral of honesty trumps dishonesty. Hard work will get you what you want. Appearances aren't everything. And my favorite: sometimes the best of what you can do is crappy. But your best is your best and it will work out in the end. LOVE IT!!!Anyway it's a very uplifting story and I would read it. Also shipping is fast!

Far Beyond any Princess Tale
This story is simple and straightforward without being "simple." Rather than being full of pious idealized cliche, or backwards, insulting generalization, the portral of the native story and peoples is confidently human and complex. I have no real vocabulary for describing the artwork, but it is piercing, rich, and underpins the story without making the story feel like a story-book. The Rough Face Girl offers so much to edify that the regular Cinderella myths seem bald in comparison. There is no witless prince who cannot even recognize his own true love in different clothes. Rather, this girl must pursue her perfect match by learning to value herself regardless of her many detractors and her poverty. Her strength lies in her purity, in her ability to see the eternal in the most humble commonplace things around her. She is not magically transfomed into some tasty sampler BEFORE winning the "prize." Rather she presents herself as-is in self-made clothing that earns the scorn and laughter of the entire village. Her humble self-assertion is not encouraged by a fairy godmother. Instead she is given a challenging test administered by an intimidating and discerning figure who also comes to life on the page. The emphasis is on inner beauty first, and love comes only because of the "seeing" of that inner beauty. Both man and woman see each other when others cannot "see" either of them clearly at all. The rough-faced girl is cherished in an enduring, tender way that does not reek of hollow love-at-first-sight romances. The rewards are well-deserved and are so much, much more impressive and enduring than any typical fairy tale's outcome. This book adapts well to whatever age, and as a mother I can vouch for that.

The Rough Girl book is a great story to read with your daughter because it's has meaning to being not perfect in this society today. It's a great book for teachers to present to their classroom and students. This is my favorite book and my daughter uses this book in her classroom. She read this book when she was a little girl.
