Q: Why does it rust the heating element? We have had 2 of these and it happened to both very quickly.

The minerals will adhere to the heating element, which needs to be cleaned weekly. Q: How many watts does this use?

Q: Should I be able to see steam if I am not using the vapor door or medicine cup?

Yes, IF you have a green light down by the adjuster steam knob. But, I have found that you need to shut off the humidifier to "restart" it as you refill the reservoir with water and give the water time to fill up the area that boils the water. You will get a red light until that new water gets to the right area and fills up . Then, when you turn the knob on it should be green. If still red, pick up the water tank, return it to the base and try turning it on again. Its a bit of a ritual but if the light won't turn green after two or three times of lifting water reservoir just leave it turned off for a few minutes and come back. Always turns green after that. Then you should hear the water heating up and steam coming out shortly afterward. I had the old VIcks 2 gallon warm mist humidifier that would be good for a couple of days on the low setting before I had to refill both the reserviors. This Vicks VWM845 runs through the water very quickly, in about 8 hours at the low setting. A pain as it seems this humidifier is always empty and not supplying warm humidity to the room. I want my old Vicks 2 gallon humidifier back!!!!

Q: Can you move the nossel to spay the mist in a direction or does the mist go straight up?
