Use a solder iron with a knife tip, 40-60 watts with 1-2 seconds would be good when soldering; Use lead-free solder tin would be better for your health；Rosin makes soldering easier. Is the red diode supposed to stay illuminated the whole time even if the on/off button is off?

No,it should only be on when power is in the on position. Check for shorts around the power switch.
