Great humor- love letter to French food
From Amazing to hysterical—the author determines to cycle Around France eating her favorite foods. Planning is not her strong suit, and her mishaps are as funny as her planned escapades! A fond look at France and the best food, tracking croissants as she goes. A great fun book!

Food and wine and a bicycle trip through France - what a combination!
A fun book about one woman’s pilgrimage around France on a bicycle to discover regional delicacies… and the best croissants. What results is a humorous tale of food, friendship, and adventure. As someone who enjoys travel, food and memoirs, this was bound to be a good read. I’d certainly recommend this if you enjoy any, if not all, of those subjects!

A culinary trail around France!
You had me at the title! A woman travels around France in search of the perfect croissant (and other food of course). There’s recipes, talks about food, good tips of places to visit, things to see, tips for cyclists and just a general love of travel and France across each and every page.I read this on a kindle and there wasn’t any photos or map in the book so I hope there is when it’s printed as they are desperately needed for a book such as this. It’s visual and the writing draws you along on that bike alongside her, but without the aches and pains she must have had on such a long journey. The countryside they travel through, the places the visit! Oh, I could wax lyrical about this for years. The author comes across as your friend, your ideal travel companion and breathes fresh air into the usual travelogue and guides. In fact this book is many things – a diary, an autobiography, a cook book and travel guide all in one. This book will make you eat!Be aware that you will be heading out to your local bakery as soon as you start reading. I do love a croissant and haven’t had one for a while but this book had me going all the way to Marks and Spencer (not quite the same I know but still). Oh to be in la France! I was very happy to see her name her favourite croissant and where to buy it. I shall be going there on my next visit for sure. And as for the other food….I’ve eaten many of the dishes mentioned and even tried a few others so it was fascinating to be taken back to those days and remember happy timesI always admire people who do things like this. This is one long journey and I can only imagine how tough it was at times and the perseverance needed to see it through. This is like a travel food guide and Tour de France all in one and it made for a fun and tasty read.

A memoir to feed some memories
Like Felicity Cloake I spent many childhood holidays in France with my parents, though 30 years earlier and without tents. Our twin bibles were the Guide des Relais Routiers and Le Guide Michelin I was taught French by French grannies armed only with Le Journal de Mickey. I ate Le Menu Touristique à 10F (potage ou pâté maisonette; steack; salade, fromage ou dessert) so many times I went off steak for years. I loved it all so much I later settled for a French partner and went back many times. Then, decades on, Felicity and Eddy the bike set of on a gastronomic Tour de France. They visit many of the places I have been, she eats many of the things I have eaten. They have adventures. It’s all in some ways so similar to the French experience I knew in the 60s and of course so very different. Felicity is very much her own woman with her own agenda, and a capacity for athletic cycling I can only envy. One of the things I loved about the book is that she admits to the sometimes base, sometimes trivial motives that go into decisions and choices; in her well-judged writing this is illuminating, charming, and often very funny. The whole thing carries you along like free-wheeling. It brought back many memories, but also took me to some unexpected corners of France. Then there are the interposed explanations of specific points of French gastronomy and French life and 21 recipes. Bon appetit!I had both the Kindle and Audible versions and switched between them. The Audible version is in Felicity’s own voice. Both are enjoyable and recommended.

Loved it!
I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this book. I have one of her cookbooks, which I love and she is such a funny, lovely writer. There are recipes in this book, which is all about rediscovering the wonder ofFrench cooking but it is not a cookbook. It is even better than that. She writes about cycling through France, the food she eats and the food she longs to eat with such wit that I was roaring laughing the whole way through. A foodie book with cycling. Shades of Elizabeth David mixed with Nigel Slater with a touch of Jilly Cooper in the best possible way. I'm ordering another copy so I can have a copy on my cookbook shelf and my normal book shelf. Just loved it.

Charming and informative, with tough love for France
I like all the stuff mentioned in other reviews: the food, the cycling, the sheer greed on show, and above all the really good (and hilarious) writing. Felicity Cloake has a very good pedigree as a food writer, and this helps in many ways.A particular thing I liked was her unvarnished view of France. She really loves the country, the people and the food, but not in an over-romanticised way. Shops and restaurants are closed, campsites are dreadful, people can be grumpy, but it's all still worth it. In other words, she's experiencing real life. I live in France a lot, also love it, and I recognise and applaud this realism.

Le Tour de France for the senses
Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. It brought me back to France. I could feel the rain. I could taste the food, I have eaten most of the recipes in the book at one time or another in my life. I could see the countryside go by, or sense the frustration of going round and round stuck in one of those endless city periphery 'zone industrielle' or 'zone commercial' . As a food lovers take on the Tour de France Felicity Cloake invites us to join her through her different 'stades' a recipe at a time. Hence, 'Moules Marinieres' on the Cherbourg to Avranches leg of her tour or a 'Ratatouille' for the Marseille to Nice part etc... I can but recommend this cleverly crafted part travel book, part recipe book set in France.

Makes me want to get on my bike right now.
Extremely good read, part travelogue, part cookbook and 100% fun throughout. One woman (and visiting friends) tour round France by cycle aiming to taste the definitive dishes of the regions.Loved the Croissant Count, and rating, at the end of each chapter and the little details such as the regional impacts of rail strikes.A great read and, if you cook the recipes, a treat for the tastebuds as well as the mind.
