Prior to installing I discovered the lid was extremely hard to open pushing up from the underside with both thumbs. I did not want scratch it so I did NOT try pry it open from the top. After reclosing it I was unable to push it open again, and I'm quite strong, I popped it open again from the underside using a wooden dowel that I banged downward to the floor..Then I siad to self - "go ahead file those damn pins". After several test trials I got the easy opening I wanted. The product is quite superior to a lot of the junk that is out here on the market. Tip: Scan the template on the back side of the instructions so you can easily cut out the template without destroying the instructions on the front page.

I see a lot of other reviews whining that they're hard to open. Yeah, that's the point of them, you're not supposed to be able to open them without a tool. If you expect to use these to plug and unplug a variety of things often, get something else. These are meant to have something plugged in, and snapped shut. That's why there is the rubber grommet in the lid for the cord to come through. They aren't hard to open if you just stick a flat blade screwdriver in there and pry it up. I like that they stay shut as I put two of these under my sofas since they have power recliners. It's way better than having a dumb cord running across the floor since my sofas are not against walls. You do have to cut a pretty good sized hole in the floor and the template should actually be a little bigger, but upon test fit, you'll figure it out; go a little wider and all is well.

Works great, if yours isn’t sitting flush with the floor, widen your hole a bit, it could be pinching the brackets on either side which caused a clearance problem for me. Trimmed a little more on each side and boom fit perfect. When you screw or in it also will synch everything down. This is solid, looks great.

I installed this in a carpeted floor over 3/4" subfloor. Installing over carpet adds a layer of difficulty to this project. The hole in the subfloor has to be absolutely perfect, and you have to be super careful not to cut the carpet back too far. The screws that mount the sides of the box to the floor are about 1/8" away from the edge of the hole. I pre-drilled holes that angled away from the hole, just so the screws wouldn't blow out. In the long direction of the box, the box has little tabs that stick out that don't fit within the dimension of the template. But if you widen the hole to allow for the tabs, then the screws that hold the cover on have nothing to screw into. Again, I angled these screws back away from the hole and managed to find some material. I don't think these things would be as much of an issue if mounting on bare floor, but the carpet was a pain. Now that it's in, it looks nice. Good quality product. I'm taking a star off for how unforgiving the design is.

Please turn off breaker before you begin this project. The first step is to find a suitable location for the floor outlet with another outlet nearby by using a 14 gauge Romex to piggyback from. Next, cut the floor. I used a jigsaw for this project. It makes cutting easier. Have shop vac ready! You don’t need to use all the screws but make sure it’s not loose. Wire everything correctly, and use receptacle tester to check. Adjust the side screws so the floor box cover can fit into the junction box. Don’t forget the gasket! Next, screw in the four screws for the cover, but I only use two. LASTLY, enjoy the fruit of your labor. P.S. You can also pay a handyman $150-$200, material not included.

bought this item twice because I liked the way the looked and put the receptacle in the floor

The latch that holds the cover closed is really REALLY TIGHT! There is a slot for a screwdriver to pop it open but when you first get it out of the box the latch is so tight that you will damage the cover prying it open. I called Raco and Garrett explained to that the latch should be oiled a tiny bit and cycled by hand (uninstalled) many times to reduce the force needed to open the cover. If you turn the cover over and put your thumb(s) on the underside and press really hard you can pop it open. I have arthritis so I had to tap it with a screwdriver and hammer to get it open the first time. I then oiled it and was able to open and close it with my weak old hands. After about 20 cycles it was much easier to open and the prying method worked easily then. They’re really nice boxes and the covers are really well made and look great when installed.

Solid, well-made product. Instructions provide a template for the hole required in your floor, but no further guidance on cutting the hole. The most difficult part of this job was cutting the hole in my oak flooring. The template is a rectangle with rounded corners. I started with a 2" hole saw in each corner then completed the sides of the rectangle with a jigsaw. However, I hit a flooring nail. Nails embedded in wood can be stubborn. I used a grinding wheel to cut the nail but there are lots of other ways to deal with embedded nails. This was more $$ than similar products but worth it.

The quality of the outlet is obvious as soon as you pick up the box; it is heavy and the top cover is a very solid brass. It would be nice if the included template was made of cardboard (vs being part of the paper instruction sheet), but not that big of a deal. Relatively easy to install if you are comfortable cutting a hole in your floor. Easy to adjust the height of the outlet in the floor to make sure it presses up tightly against the outlet. If using a jigsaw, I find it best to cut a small golf-ball sized hole in a larger piece of cardboard to protect the finished floor from marring by the bottom of your jigsaw, although it could just be my jigsaw that likes to scratch up things. One note that I think others have also mentioned: it takes a great deal of force/leverage to open the cover. Maybe this gets more loose with time, but as we just installed them it takes a screwdriver to open the flap. This makes it really great for keeping things plugged in, like a lamp, but not so great if you want to flop down on the couch and reach down to plug in your phone (unless you keep the flap open, which kind of defeats the sleek and unobtrusive point of having this outlet.
