No. They work just like the white plastic erasers you get at the art store for drafting or illustration. Keep it clean and you should have no worries. It even removes most charcoal, if you keep the tip clean. I love it.

The packaging says "Applicator made in Japan. Refill made in Korea". The quality is good. I've been using it for a while and pretty satisfy with it.
