Does this gate have to sit on the floor or can it be installed a couple inches above the floor? I'm worried about it scratching my wood floor.

Ours was installed a couple inches above the floor but when you open it you'll have to lift it so it doesn't scratch when you swing it back

how small does it retract?

It retracts the length of the top bar, 23”, plus add 1/2” for the hinge. It swings both ways so you can open it to almost flat against a wall or straight into a room.

When fully expanded how wide are the gaps (diamond shapes)?

About 3.5" x 5.5" (width x height) , if you are measuring from the points of the diamond.
