Q: What causes the machine to go off and on randomly?

It has a sensor. Or u can set the larger one, to automatically sense when u are near it. Or I have it set to tap the piece at the bottom to go on. It turns off automatically. It works great!

Q: Do I need both filters?

The unit comes with both filters and they are cleanable so the only reason you would need extra filters is if you clean the intake filter and do not want to wait for it to dry before the next use. The exhaust filter is only a screen and is easy to clean and dry so there is no need for an extra unless it were to get broken. I purchased both as extras because things do happen and I don't like to wait to use things if I don't have to. You can order others later if you need or want them. Hope this answers it for you.

Q: Where does this filter go?

this filter goes in the exhaust slot on the lower right hand side where you will see a lot of holes for the exhaust, it just pulls straight up and out of the slot.
