Christos Gageโs debut in the Crossed mythos is one you wonโt soon forget. This volume of Crossed takes readers into the mind of a traitor to the human race. An anthropologist who sides with an alpha-Crossed to spare his life and betray the struggling survivors around him. Watching his own usefulness dwindle in the eyes of the violence hungry Crossed, he must ultimately make a decision if death will come to him on their terms or his. And fan-favorite, horror master David Lapham returns to the series that he helped establish with a story that pushes the boundaries of sanity to the very brink. The horrific violence of the Crossed spills across the page leaving images that will haunt your nightmares for years to come. There is no help. There is no hope. There is only the Crossed. Go where other horror survival stories fear to tread and enter the grueling world of the Crossed! Trade collects issues #29 - 36 of the ongoing Crossed: Badlands series. Review: Anthropology at it's finest - This was one of my favorite volumes. It told a great story of an anthropologist who studied the crossed and then became a Jane Goodall among them. I will say I liked the return in the second story, but it sort of disappointed me the way things turned out. Review: I love crossed they never disappoint me - I love crossed they never disappoint me! It's wild from start to finish with a usually great story line! And always great drawings. The visuals are perfect every time. This one in particular was great. I loved the idea that they could be smarter and play the right cards and do things to get ahead.

The story and series is really good. The gore in the series is over the top for some people, but horror fans will love it.

Smokey and Amanda. Two separate stories in one volume.
Crossed: Badlands Vol. 7 Avatar, collects issues 29-36 Two stories this volume. First story is Quisling. We learn quisling is a synonym for traitor. Itโs applicable. Anthropologist Oliver and his fellow survivors have observed an aberration among the Crossed. Nicknamed โSmokey,โ he wears a firemanโs coat, wields an axe, and knows how to use it. Heโs different; Smokey is smarter, a planner, and delights in maximizing his cruelty. They split into separate groups to gather supplies for their next planned move. Oliver pairs Tina with himself. He see Tina as a threat to the groupโs survival. He plans to eliminate the threat. Oliver does not get the opportunity. Smokey does it for him. In order to survive, Oliver offers Smokey a deal โ he will lead Smokey and his group to the Uninfected. Oliver betrays his fellow survivors Pat, Daniel, and Tommy. Alan the cop is the next to succumb to Oliver. Eve survives but only by becoming one of the Crossed. Oliver continues to prove his usefulness to Smokey, leading him to more prey, including the National Guard. Living among the Crossed, Oliver keeps a journal, noting his observations. Smokey reads the journal andโฆ lets Oliver live. Oliver burns the journal. Oliver directs Smokey to Cheynne Mountain in Denver, part of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). His end goal โ the death of Smokey. Oliver purposely gets himself infected, maybe his one redeeming action. Exit Oliver. Second story is Breakdown. Itโs the return of Amanda. I think last seen in Vol. 6 but around since Vol. 3. Sheโs still surviving with Sir Killweather and the Great Kong. Amanda encounters a seemingly religious sect of the Crossed given their attire. They captured Kong and Killweather. Kong is killed and Killweather is infected. Amanda is still haunted by Harold Lorre, the psychopath from Vol. 3. He gives her advice she doesnโt want to hear but follows. She encounters another group of survivors. Amanda kills Mike, making it look like he was a victim of the Crossed. Next, She kills John. The Crossed reappear. While escaping, Amanda kills Tammy too. The survivors did not survive Amanda. I found Quisling more interesting than Breakdown. Oliver proves to be a contender as best villain in the series. And poor Amandaโฆ As expected, very graphic art. Best quotes: Oliver โ โNo oneโs going to rescue us. Get used to that thought.โ Pat โ โโฆ itโs not our World. It belongs to the Monsters now.โ Eve to Oliver โ โYouโre worse than they are.โ Oliver โ โThere is no escape. There is no hope. There is only the Crossed.โ Amanda โ โThey think they are getting a friend. Instead, theyโre getting their worst enemy.โ

Pretty Good
A lot of people feel this series goes over the top with the gore, violence, and horrific depictions. I do think some times it is purely gratuitous, but most times I think it is meant to get the point across. I like that, for the most part, these comics follow different people in each series rather than sticking with the same characters all the time. It makes it different from other post apok comics (TWD, Y the Last Man, etc). There is, at least from my perspective, an underlying single theme in every one of them though: What are you willing to do in order to survive, and can you live with what you do. While it is no "The Walking Dead", it is very much akin to a zombie apocalypse type story. They have my interest enough to wonder where the tale is going to take us, and how they may or may not wrap the whole thing up. A good read, but very graphic and NOT for kids.
