HEAVY DUTY PROGRAM
I have not played chess in decades and this program seems to have abilities far beyond my level. I will, probably, use about 10% of what it can do. One interesting thing: I asks you to enter the security code to activate the program, but does not accept it. When I start the program it asks for the security code, but I just cancel past it and the program runs. I feel that this indicates this is an old program and they are not concerned about security anymore. Still, it appears to be a good program.

Not user friendly
I tried this chess software. Its not very user friendly, in fact, it uses a voice to constantly tease and demean its opponents and takes special pleasure in showing off how good it is and how poor its opponents are. Well, I am a poor player with a ranking of 1100. Fritz starts at 1200, but usually plays much higher. I quickly de-installed this game and opted for the much more friendly Chess Master. It may suit players who have a high ELO rating

Buggy Software
I have purchased many editions of Fritz over the years and never had an issue. This version, however, has several issues which has left me wishing I had stuck with the earlier versions. I am running windows 8.1 - the software took an age to install but eventually seemed to install correctly. On running the programme, however the chess engine was turned off by default and had to be turned on at the start up - which may leave someone new to the program confused. The software is very buggy despite being updated. It frequently hangs when 'thinking' about a move and sometimes crashes fatally. In friend mode the automatic adjustment to match the players strength at the end of the game did not work correctly and stayed stuck at a set level. Check mate did not appear to be recognised - it just shows check but then stops playing. My advice would be to go for an earlier version of Fritz - there appears to be too many 'bell and whistles' on this one which are in my view are not needed in a chess game. I personally prefer the simpler but superb 'Shredder' Classic 4 download which is very adaptive and plays a superb game although lacks many of the features. A Repair of the program did not work so I did a complete re-install - reactivate, followed by a software update.Still 'buggy' and the automatic rating update (adjustment) is still very intermittent. Overall not worth the hassle particularly as you can buy chess apps for Ipad etc like Chess Genius and Shredder for less than ยฃ5 that will wipe the floor at the highest ratings for the average player' as well as chess software for the pc like Shredder or the free ARENA all of which have a simpler interface and have been hassle free. The one thing you cannot fault about fritz is the superb chess engine.

Very poor software. Buy something else...anything else!!
The Fritz 14 SE software was very buggy and wouldn't run properly. I have a perfectly adequate PC, but the chess game lagged dreadfully and often crashed the PC. It totally locked up the CPU and made a hard reboot of the PC the only way out. I don't ever play Fritz 14 SE now. I have the chess engine still on my hard drive, and I can use that engine whilst playing on an earlier verion of Fritz (I have 7 and 10). I can also use the 14 SE engine when analysing old games. However, as a standalone chess game (which is what I bought it for!) I found Fritz 14 SE to be a waste of money. It can't be used for the purpose I bought it. The only reason I didn't complain is the firm I bought it from were in Iceland and I didn't think a complaint would be worthwhile. Personally speaking I would advise against buying the game
