A new, definitive edition of Herman Melvilleโs virtuosic short storiesโAmerican classics wrought with scorching fury, grim humor, and profound beauty Though best-known for his epic masterpiece Moby-Dick , Herman Melville also left a body of short stories arguably unmatched in American fiction. In the sorrowful tragedy of Billy Budd, Sailor ; the controlled rage of Benito Cereno ; and the tantalizing enigma of Bartleby, the Scrivener ; Melville reveals himself as a singular storyteller of tremendous range and compelling power. In these stories, Melville cuts to the heart of race, class, capitalism, and globalism in America, deftly navigating political and social issues that resonate as clearly in our time as they did in Melvilleโs. Also including The Piazza Tales in full, this collection demonstrates why Melville stands not only among the greatest writers of the nineteenth century, but also as one of our greatest contemporaries. This Penguin Classics edition features the Reading Text of Billy Budd, Sailor , as edited from a genetic study of the manuscript by Harrison Hayford and Merton M. Sealts, Jr., and the authoritative Northwestern-Newberry text of The Piazza Tales . For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500ย titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theย series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-dateย translations by award-winning translators.

Great edition of a classic that stands test of time
I remember having to read Billy Budd as a high school student many decades ago and not really enjoying the experience. At that point, we were assigned this novel, rather than Moby Dick, I'm sure because it was so much shorter. Coming back to Billy Budd in my 60s, I found myself really drawn into this epic confrontation of moral purity and moral corruption. In fact, I even went back and watched the Peter Ustinov and Terence Stamp classic film, based on the novel, which I can also recommend: Billy BuddWhat I want to say in this review is that: In selecting a new version of the novel to read, I spent a lot of time looking over various versions available to me. And I'm very pleased with this edition and its supplements. If you're similarly searching around Amazon for a good edition, you'll do very well with this Penguin Classics edition. Because these reviews sometimes migrate to other pages for other versions of the same book, I'll specify here that I'm talking about the edition listed as ASIN: B00Y9HIMLY

Not beginner Friendly & Good
I read this book when I was a freshman and it felt like the writing was not easy to understand so I had to go back and read it 3 times to finally understand it. But, that aside, I learned a lot from it so I cannot complain, just wish it had been easier. Thanks regardless.

All of the Melville that isn't Moby-Dick
You get everything Melville one needs in this volume. Bartleby, Benito Cereno, and Billy Budd, plus others. I love this edition and Melville proves to be one of our best writers in its passages.

some of Melville's lesser known works
Worth reading fora boarder understanding of the author of Moby Dick. Well bound - good Penguin product.

Meh
Bartleby is boring, budd is good but unfinished the rest are Meh. Not surprising cuz Moby Dick is massively overrated and that's the only thing Melville was born to write.

Melville's crucial late work, in a very fine edition, with important intro!
Contains Benito Cereno among the "other stories," thus including perhaps the two works of Melville most in the minds of contemporary scholars, on issues of gender studies, ethnic studies, queer studies, etc. But mostly, what amazing writing!

"I would prefer" to rate this book as very good!
I bought this mainly to read Bartleby, but some of the other stories are pretty good too. Havent finished the book yet. Not my usual genre, but the book of Bartleby gives some insight in to the motives of the character which isnt present on the movie versions. Sad story.
