What is that slider button on the side? The video says it is throat depth, but it has a picure of 'lock' and 'unlock' etc?

You slide it how deep you want it to staple then rotate it to lock it in place. I have had really good luck with these. I buy a lot of them. They have not broken yet, like some cheaper ones.

How smooth are the staple edges on the bottom of the stack of sheets; would they scratch a person or table?

It doesn't scratch a person or table the staples come out nice and flat. Only thing I do not like about the stapler is there is a bar for a guard where you put the pages in to be stapled and it does not fit 70 pages the bar needs to be made higher for thickness of paper. Other than that nice stapler very quiet does a nice job. Hope this helps
