is this the right choice to be picking up aluminum cans with ?

If the cans are empty this should work fine. However, if the cans could have liquid in them I would recommend a stronger grip such as http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000V0AGS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , which can pick up full 15oz cans of food from above your head. Also, if you are going to use the grabber a lot (like picking up trash from a sporting event) I would suggest to spent the extra money and get the one I mentioned above.I also like http://www.amazon.com/Ettore-49036-Grip-n-Grab/dp/B001B13PC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405388354&sr=8-1&keywords=grabber because it can pick up heavy things with ease.

how many pounds can it pick up?

Right now, not much. It does have a wide grabber area. It would probably work well for jars and things. I need to use it mainly to pick up things that I dropped. Like paper so I don't have to bend over to get it and until I glue some type of foam on the end, it's not very good at it.

does this come with a clip to attach it to a walker?

No it does not. Handle has a round hole maybe you could attach a clip to it. Very handy tool.

Can I buy replacements for the gold plastic piece at the pick-up end? I ordered 3 of these and all three plastic pieces are gone.

I cut a piece of wood the same size and shape of the plastic piece and hold it in place with rubber bands... the last pick-up I ordered didn't even closeall the way! it wouldn't pick up the morning newspaper.. their quality is very bad.. I have been ordering these for years and the last two shipments have been defective.r lurie
