The surface is a textured foot on each arm that can be removed. When it is removed, the cylinder it is mounted to becomes the contact/gripping point.

Can this clamp deteriorate in sunlight? I want to secure heavy plastic to my greenhouse frame.

Most likely it’s plastic over time it will get brittle
