Is it normal for the Bowie Stylophone to sometimes sound scratchy, crackly or distorted?

Yes – perfectly normal. To protect your Stylophone from corrosion and other damage during shipment, a protective coating was applied to the keyboard and stylus tip which may cause a "crackling" sound when the Stylophone is played. This is easily removed by rubbing with a soft cloth or contact cleaner. Thanks! Dubreq

It does but really tiny print and only a few tunes.

What digital instruments can you plug into the Stylophone

You can't plug anything into a Stylophone. It has an 3.5mm jack socket output that you can put through effects.
