No, you can make it so the solid end is pointing inwards so you can't see it.

Why is there a hole in the side of the ceiling attachment?

I think you will find that the hole is there to enable the cables to be adjusted to be the desired length. The base fixing is screwed to the ceiling, the wire is passed through “cover” and the ball bearing (this locks cable) and the out of the hole in the side. The cover can be screwed on to the base and you will be unable to pull the cable downwards. However, you can pull it up by the cable from the hole. This means that you can easily adjust the cable length for each fitting and make the same length if that’s what you require. Sorry, it’s difficult to describe but hopefully it will make some sense.

Thickness of wire with protective coating??

Hello. Sadly, Amazon don't allow attachments other than video otherwise I would have sent you a picture of the wire in a digital vernier caliper gauge showing the exact measurement! However, according to the gauge it appears to be 1.5mm including the plastic coat. The stranded core wire is probably about 1mm. It is very strong!

Extremely easy to use

These are exactly what they say they are. They’re currently holding up a heavy mirror for me so they’re strong, but they were also easy to slide down to size and attach to the rings on the mirror with the little carabiner type attachments. Once you’ve shorted the wire, I don’t think you can lengthen it again, and don’t forget, you’ll need some kind of wire cutter (we used a tool usually used for trimming guitar strings) to cut away the excess wire.
