Great for Understanding Science
I purchased this product for its experiments. The product itself arrived before his first day off from school which was great timing. The product itself is packaged very well. If you use it properly, you will never have any missing pieces because everything has its place. I planned an entire homeschooling day and used this as a supplement to the Science class. My son and I did the banana dna experiment...that was a lot of fun. It was great to see how we could extract the dna of a fruit by following the simple steps in the book. There are other experiments and of course the lessons on dna etc. This is definitely a great tool for helping anyone who is dna challenged understand how it works. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to have fun with Science.

This is a fantastic kit. I bought it for a smart (but not off the charts) 7 year old who had a heritage unit in school that included a talk about DNA in a non-scientific way and asked for a science kit for Christmas. I knew nothing about DNA, so I hemmed and hawed over a few kits. We did this kit together. She loved it and I loved it too. Start by making the model. By the time your child has put it together, she will know the names of the four the nitrogen bases (and no, I had no idea what that was before we started this kit), then do the replication exercise, then do the experiments in order. Everything builds on the exercise before it. All you need is some denatured alcohol, a piece of fruit, a coffee filter, this kit and Google. By the time you are finished, your kid (and you), won't be doing genetic research, but you will have a much better understanding of DNA.

Good buy
I got this to use for some experiments with my daughter, some of the experiments worked as expected while some fell short. But overall, I will consider it a good buy.

Excellent Educational Product
For the price, I was pleasantly surprised with the educational value of this kit. I purchased it mainly to use the hands-on DNA helix in a Forensic Science class. It does a great job of showing DNA and replication. We completed most of the experiments in the kit with easily-available household items. The kit did offer two other optioins to the denatured alcohol mentioned by another reviewer. We used regular rubbing alcohol for that experiment and it worked fine. The included booklet does a nice job of overviewing the subject with pictures illustrating concepts.

fun activites
my son got this for Christmas and he likes it. i didnt know that there were many things that you have to have to do some of these things. i thought pretty much everything that was needed would be in the box. after going to the store and getting everything we needed to do these activities my son loved it!

Not as advertised
My son wanted a science fair project. From description it sounded like you could test the DNA to see if fruit was male or female. This kit shows how to extract DNA but then that's it. Nothing on what to do with it or any kind of experiments with it. It was useless to us.

great dna book for 4th-8th graders
I have just received this DNA kit and it is just what I had hoped. The experiments are easy to follow with pictures to guide you and there are plenty of different experiments to try. There seems to be lots of information included in the experiment book. The actual DNA model pieces are smaller than I expected.
