The little boy said, "Mother, there is a lion in the meadow." The mother said, "Nonsense, little boy." And that's where the fun begins. A little boy becomes convinced that a lion is living in the meadow behind his house, but his mother doesn't believe him. She thinks he's making up a story, and decides to make one up too. She gives the little boy a matchbox and tells him that the dragon living inside it will scare the lion in the meadow away. But what's a little boy to do when the dragon from the matchbox grows too big and the lion in the meadow decides to move into the house? In this heartwarmingly funny and vibrantly illustrated story, bestselling author Margaret Mahy invokes the power of imagination and the joy of imaginary friends for young readers. Review: A Special Favourite - This lovely book was a special favourite of my children 30 years ago and was very worn when it became the book of choice for my then two and a half year old grand-daughter. So I was I was very happy when I found I could buy a replacement. Whilst the story of a little boy who finds a lion in the meadow is the same, this edition has more detailed and beautiful illustrations which, along with the stretch in imagination, really appeal to my now 3 year old. Review: How to deal with fear - I read an article in the New Yorker where a person explained how this book helps this person to speak English . My daughter and I love it.

Lovely story
My son received this book as a gift when he was 3 and he absolutely fell in love with it. We read it so often he could recite most pages verbatim! Very sweet books for younger children.

Magical book.
This is wonderful, magical book. The images created in the reader's mind merge perfectly with our childhood fantasies of bringing wildlife indoors.

Best book for children
I sent this book to my grandsons (4 and 2) in London (ordered from New Zealand). The younger one (2) absolutely loves it - it is his favourite book and he takes it to bed with him. Both boys painted pictures of the lion in the meadow after having had it read to them. . Would strongly recommend this book.
