can you use this reel for saltwater and freshwater both?

Yes, these reels will work in freshwater and saltwater, just make sure you select the appropriate size for your intended use. I will say that unless you are chasing large catfish, big carp, or other powerful and larger freshwater species, there is not a big reason to use a Slammer III in freshwater. The 6500III is good for big catfish and the 3500III and 4500III are solid options for channels and carp.

What is the difference between 5500 and 6500

Drag is higher in 6500 and line capacity. I purchased 7500 as I use it for trolling, but 5500 is good enough for inshore trolling, kayak... The 5500 drag is 40lbs... 6500 Reel phisical size is also bigger than 5500
