Galangal is one of the key ingredients in dishes such as Thai Tom Yum soup, Malaysian Asam Laksa, Cambodian Samlor Kor Ko soup, Vietnamese Hue cuisine, and various Indonesian dishes such as Soto soup and the famous, spicy Beef Rendang. When in a soup, it’s usually sliced into discs that are only used as a way to add flavor, not meant to eat, they’re way to fibrous.

dissapointed
I was disappointed in the quality of the rhizomes when I got them.

Misleading description
This was definitely frozen and thawed, not fresh. I could have bought frozen from my local Asian market. Waste of money.

Great Option
I am so happy I ordered this. I must admit for being a fresh product the shipping does seem to be a bit long. Though I did receive the package before it said it was going to arrive. Since it is shipping from so far away, the shipping is actually reasonable - just not ideal for fresh produce. I really don't like the way it is package, I'm not sure why all manufacturers and produces package their produce is plastic bags. It is the worst way to package any fresh product (unless you are trying to ripen bananas!!). Some muslin, cheesecloth, paper bag or even a paper towel with the produce in the plastic bag would be a better way or packaging. I still arrived in good shape and I only had to cut off minimal bits of mold (to be expected with fresh produce being shipping in a plastic bag across the world/country). I would recommend being sure you know the amount you are ordering. 150 grams of galangal (or any rhizome/root) is not a lot of produce. They did send me a few grams over the amount ordered. I also ordered the 8 ounce pack of galangal from the same seller and will likely just buy a few of those next time instead. For some reason I convinced myself that they would be two different types of galangal (because the pictures were varied) and they were just the same greater galangal. Soooo happy with my purchase because finding galangal in Delaware (USA) is pretty much impossible. I used some fresh immediately upon receiving and then froze the rest as it is part of the same family as ginger it'll hold up just fine in the freezer.

Galangal I Received WAS NOT YOUNG CROP
Received Fast - USPS priority mail - arrived in Ten days. Galangal depicted as sprouting, young and fresh - What I received was Older stock, woody, hard with the taste and fragrance of pine. The picture showed the promise of Spring I probably received cold storage Fall seasons diggings. Price was good - I can use the piece I received for medicinal purposes. CERTAINLY NOT palatable/impossible to slice with a knife to add as an ingredient to food. If grated or steamed it adds GREAT FLAVOR to meals!

Do not purchase. I planted this 6 weeks ago ...
Do not purchase. I planted this 6 weeks ago and there is no growth on it. For 8.99 you would hope they would sell you something that had not been sprayed on the trip over.
