Outlaw Star: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]

Missed the old shows and I had to buy this one in particular. This should be on crunchyroll.com but I don't think this will ever be posted. A oldie but still gold in my mind.

Fun exciting and inspiring to watch how hard people work on art and how detailed it is.

I love the show. The transfer is great. Nice clear picture and good sound. What I'm less thrilled about is the fact that the case came all cracked up and one of the DVD holders is also broken so the disk slides around inside. I may still consider returning it to see if I can get one that isn't damaged. Update: 2-16-2023: I decided to return the first one. Amazon was quick about shipping out a replacement. It arrived today. And was just as broken as the first one. This one arrived in a too-large box without even a bag of air like the first one. I managed to scavenge parts from both cases to put together one set that is at least serviceable, though still slightly cracked. I'm sending back the more broken one. If you don't want to read a rant you can stop now. To be honest I think the blame should be distributed equally between Amazon (for barely even trying to protect these kinds of things) and the company who produced the cases. They're so thin and weak that just looking at them wrong causes them to break. I have DVD cases from 2003 that are far stronger and more resilient than these. They sell this to us on the premise that its "eco" friendly and I'm all about saving the planet... but when it takes 2 tries to get one product that is acceptable, including all the diesel and gas used to ship it around and the wasted time and money, then maybe just using an appropriate amount of plastic in the first place would be better?

Love the show and is a great addition to my anime collection.

*this is for the June 2017 NA release of this series* I'm reviewing the actual release, because anybody coming here hopefully knows that this is the perfect anime series (unashamed bias). The color is crisp and amazing, it truly brings a whole new life to a show that I've seen a good 20 times over. On a good 4K tv this release looks outstanding. I just recently watched the anime legends DVD release and this blu ray release is hands over fist the better release. It's actually really cool to see some film grain in the cells that were used, which appear because the definition/scaling. The audio is crisp, detailed, and has amazing room,depth, and panning. The mixing engineer did great work on bringing attention to what is needed while still using great dynamics to highlight ambience and action. Punches you right in the face still. I was a child when I first watched this anime on toonami and it honestly brings back the feeling of watching it that first time, cross-legged in front of the CRT TV. The sub and dub are great. I admitedly always watch this show dubbed first because of nostalgia, and wow! it holds up so well! I will return to review the sub when I do my second watch. This series needed a high definition release and this collection doesn't disappoint. Completely new experience. Amazing !!! The only thing I regret is not getting the collectors edition!!

I remember catching random episodes of this show when it aired on Toonmai. This release seems to be a little edgier than what I recall from the 90s - more violent, bad language, sexual undertones. It is like I am experiencing this show for the first time. It is really great, I remember people always called Outlaw Star a poor mans Cowboy Bebop, but I honestly am really enjoying this re-watch. The show is well paced, characters are fun, and the main story line is interesting. It might not have the same animation polish that Cowboy Bebop has, but this series is definitely charming in its own way. There is the main story with Gene trying to figure out what to do with his life and the Galactic Layline, but every third episode or so, there is a random side mission that is just a one off trip the crew goes on. It helps keep the show fun and exciting. I do have two issues with this release that keep me from giving this a perfect score: 1. There doesn't seem to be any closed caption option for the Dub. You have two "English" subtitle options, but one is merely used for signs and other written language so you can see what you are reading (since it is in Japanese). The other is the translation subtitle to be used with the Japanese language track, so it stays closer to the original Japanese script. It doesn't use the same dialog cues and exact wording as the English language track. It is surprisingly close most of the time, but still not a true closed captions for the hard of hearing. 2. I had a hard time playing a copy episodes on Blu Ray disc 3.. Luckily the DVDs that came with the package have been playing back fine so far, but it is a bit of a bummer to go from HD to SD for a few episodes. Overall, I would recommend this to fans that grew up on Toonami re runs. Very cool to be able to re visit an old classic. Although, if you have the extra $20, I would grab the collectors edition. Kind of wish I did.

Love this series! I got it in Blue-ray which looks a lot better for bigger 60" or larger screens. I can't wait to show my daughter this series as i named her after Melfina, one of the main characters in this series. The gist of the story is the main characters get hired to gaurd a pirate. They end up with space ship only the Bio-andriod-human can navigate aka Melfina. A whole lot of bad guys are constantly trying to either steal the ship or kill them. They make odd friends that help them along the way. Eventully finding what everyone has been after from the start, the galactic ley line. Some kind of rift that would be similar to our heaven i guess. Only this place answers all your questions. You gpt to watch it. You won't be disappointed.

日本版のBD-BOXと同じマスターを使用している様なので、リマスター化されたHD画質はDVDや配信版など比べようも無い程綺麗にブラッシュアップされ、旧マスターにあったフィルムスクラッチやブレも気にならない程に修復されている様です。 当たり前ですが、北米版ですので日本語音声にすると強制的に英語字幕が固定されますが、私は映画を字幕で見る派で画面下のクレジット表記には慣れているので気になりませんでした。 音声も日本版のPCM音声から日本語/英語共にドルビーTRUE HD 2.0chに変わってます。（どちらもロスレスなので大して変わりませんが） 前記した様に強制英語字幕と言うハンデや各ディスクの盤面のプリントの雑さ（海外は総じてこの程度です）等はありますが、3枚のディスクに本編（未放送回の温泉エピソードもあり）とパイロット、ノンクレジットオープニングとエンディング等日本版の内容を全て網羅して、日本版の半額以下で入手出来るので、必要以上に日本版への拘りが無ければこちらで十分だと思います。

Although it might not be for everyone, I'm enjoying this series. The character designs are fantastic and the world is rich and imaginative.

I owned the dvd collection, and the video quality in this blu-ray release is much improved. The animation is a little dated now but looks crisp, and the colours are great.Outlaw Star is a scifi drama with a couple of mysteries that the main characters try to solve. I won't ruin any of the plot, because it's best to see for yourself how everything unfolds. The price of this set is well worth it for a 26 episode series that comes to a nice resolution.

A great bluray collection. Arrived next day. Ive already started it, and its an awesome blast from the past of a 90s anime.
