Great reference book & good for beginners.

I bought this book, and a leather craft kit for my husband's birthday. He hasn't had an opportunity to start using it yet, but he said he really liked the book, and thinks it will be very useful. Apparently he'd been looking at this one for a while, and it just happened to be the one I picked. Which worked out great. He's really excited to get into leather working.

I bought it for my son to use. He wanted to get started in leathercrafting. This helps him with the steps to build his skills.

That equality

For what it is, is it a fairly good book, but I feel it’s misrepresented here. This is more of an intermediate book than a beginner book. As a beginner, I didn’t realize that there is a difference between “leather crafting” and “leatherworking.” I’ve heard/seen people say the terms are interchangeable, but apparently there is a technical distinction. I was more interested in the leatherworking, which feels to me to be the true beginning of this hobby. Leather crafting is apparently largely about putting designs onto/into leather, then usually using that to create something of a more artistic nature. Leatherworking is about creating functional things, which can have some decoration to them, but are more about the function than the art. So it seems to me that beginning in leatherworking comes before leather crafting, as it makes sense to want to know how to craft an item before learning how to get into decorating the leather. That is why I say this book is more of an intermediate book. If this listing has made that more clear, and I had still bought it, it would be a 5 star review. But it gives me the impression that they are using the interchangeable term part of the culture to sell books to a wider audience.

I bought the kindle edition based upon the high ratings. But to be honest it’s a poorly laid out book with limited information behind the high level descriptions. The sewing section doesn’t even include the saddle stitch! Misses out a good introduction section, or any form of structure to the content, not recommended for beginners or anyone expecting a detailed guide to working with leather.

The book is thinner than I expected - more like a very good quality magazine than a book. However, it has some useful content for beginners like me as it shows with clear pictures and explanations of many of the techniques needed to make leather items. It is not a project book, it’s more of a handy reference book that you can quickly and easily refer to during your learning process.

This is not a complete leather working guide, but it touches on a lot of topics. It talks about stitching, lacing, embossing, coloring, finishing edges, cutting plus a few other topics. Enough information to get beginners started and headed in the right direction, a great book for the price I'm happy I bought it.
