A real comfort upgrade for heavy school, gym, and commuter carry
I have owned the Osprey Tropos for a little over 2 weeks, and it has quickly become one of the most comfortable and nicest-looking backpacks I have owned. For context, I am 5'10", around 200 lb, and I go to the gym. I usually carry a fairly heavy school and commuter load, so comfort and weight distribution matter a lot to me. I previously used a Carhartt backpack that I liked because it was durable, looked good, and held up well cosmetically, but it did not have the best organization and became uncomfortable when fully packed. When it was maxed out, it felt like I was carrying bricks, and it started causing back and posture issues. The Tropos fixed that problem for me. It is a taller backpack and does slightly stick above my shoulders, but that height and structure help distribute the weight much better than any basic backpack I have used at a similar load. It feels like the weight sits higher and closer to my body instead of sagging low and pulling on my back. I originally looked at options like the North Face Surge, Recon, Osprey Nebula, and Tropos. The Surge had a lot of organization, but the pockets cut into the main compartment too much and made the bag feel cramped. I wanted something in the 30L+ range with good organization, but not a full tech backpack where every compartment fights for space. I chose the Tropos over the Nebula mainly because of the AirSpeed suspended back system. The laptop compartment fits my 14-inch MacBook Pro M4, 11-inch iPad Pro M1, and engineering notebook very well. I also like the suspended back system because I have had problems in the past with my MacBook screen getting squeezed inside backpacks. With the Tropos, the laptop area feels much more protected, and I do not feel like the bag is pressing directly into the computer. The kickstand has been more useful than I expected. It helps keep my space tidy and keeps the front of the backpack cleaner because the bag does not constantly fall over or need to be laid on the ground. The bottle pockets are also excellent. They fit my umbrella and Hydro Flask, and they can even hold my 40 oz Hydro Flask. It is also comfortable while biking, which was important for me because I plan to use it for commuting. It is definitely a larger and taller backpack, so it may be more than someone needs if they only carry a laptop and a few small items, but for school, commuting, gym items, and daily essentials, the size makes sense. My only real warning is rain-cover fit. The Osprey Hi-Vis rain cover that is rated up to around 34L did not fit well on this backpack when it was maxed out because of the bottom frame area. I assume it would fit a Nebula better, but for the Tropos I would look at a slightly larger rain cover, closer to 40L. The quality and overall design impressed me enough that I ended up buying an Osprey Daylite Sling and started looking at the Farpoint 40L as a possible replacement for my luggage when traveling back home. I was not really a backpack enthusiast before this, so that says a lot about how much the Tropos changed my opinion of Osprey. Overall, the Tropos was worth it for me because it solved the main issue I had with my old backpack: carrying a heavy load comfortably. It is structured, comfortable, clean-looking, and practical without feeling like an overly complicated tech backpack.

A really cool backpack
The backpack screams premium everywhere. The quality of the materials is fantastic; it is by far the best backpack I have ever had. The kickstand is something really cool and useful, and the airspeed ventilation helps to keep you cool when you are on the run. The internal distribution was really well thought out; it is not perfect but is one of the best I found in any backpack. The compression straps are not really well situated, because if you keep them loose, the mesh compartment is loose as well. Sadly, not everything can be good. Something I can't understand is the lack of some stuff to keep the sternum and shoulder straps in position. There are some elastic elements in the other straps to keep them in position; at this price point, this is completely unacceptable. This should be improved in future editions of this product, as well as the mesh compartment and the compression straps. In general, the backpack feels really comfortable when you use it for extended periods of time. As I mentioned before, there are some points to improve, but in the end it is a very good product, and I absolutely recommend it.

Best tech bag I've ever owned
I have gone through about 50 backpacks trying to find just the right one for my job. I carry a laptop and a bunch of tech gear, and I need a bag to be self-standing, have two external water bottle pockets, decent organization, and be comfortable with a lot of weight and while being worn for extended periods. This is absolutely the best one I have used yet. It is perfect for my needs. The harness is amazing, and is so comfortable I almost forget I'm wearing it. Especially with the raised mesh airscape back that allows so much more airflow than other designs. The laptop sleeve is perfect for me since I can carry both my laptop and my second screen, both in padded, suspended compartments. The water bottle pockets expand to hold my 40 ounce hydroflask and my insulated lunch bottle, and the stretch mesh compartment on the front is perfect for stashing a coat or other stuff I pick up while on site. I have always been a huge fan of Osprey packs, and this is yet another example of how good they are. I'm so happy with this pack that I think my search is finally over.

Durable sweat free 32L backpack with lifetime warranty
Great backpack. I spent a good deal of effort and time researching to find a travel backpack that can be used as a carry on bag for travel in the 25 to 30L range of volume. Must have criteria was the mesh trampoline back panel that Osprey calls their "airspeed" system. This was to alleviate back sweat while traveling. The product was successful in achieving my travel objectives keeping my things organized , accessible and my back as dry as possible. The compression straps were also helpful to keep the load as compact as possible. Durability seems excellent after a two week trip with 6 plane rides.

Amazing New Backpack with kickstand.
I have been using the Osprey Nebula backpack for several years. My nebula has been a great reliable backpack for traveling. I decided to move to the Tropos because of the new features it promoted and my Nebula is from 2019. Here are some of the features straight from Osprey that I like. Pros: โข Separate zip laptop compartment - There are 2 seperate pockets in the laptop compartment. One is for the up to 16" laptop. My MacBook Pro 15" fits perfect. I also have an MacBook Air M2 that can fit in the 2nd pocket. โข Large main compartment with internal organisation. - Have always loved the main compartment where I can put anything I need from clothes to electronics. I usually carry several organizational cases for wires and cables. This compartment is large enough to store my Nanuk 909 case with lots of room to spare. โข Scratch-resistant zip pocket - This pocket is very Essential as this is where I put my most important things. like my phone and wallet along with my AirPods or Shure bluetooth case. This is the pocket I use to put things that I need to be able to grab stuff easily from. โข Dual mesh water bottle pockets - My original Nebula had a very short mesh pocket and my YETI would always fall out. With these mesh pockets are so deep I can finally secure my 36 oz YETI. In addition I can finally put my Arcteryx down Jacket in there instead of the shove-it pocket in the Nebula. โข Front panel stretch shove-it pocket - I will have to say that this is the random pocket where I end up shoving receipts, silverware, snacks, even sauce packets I collect when traveling. โข Zip organization pocket - This pocket is inside the "organization compartment". I love that it is now in the top compared to the bottom of my old Nebula. This pocket is perfect for storing my passport. This compartment has been essential for me to put the things I need when hanging out and lounging in airports. This is where I keep a dedicated charging cable and power supply along with sun glasses. There is also plenty of room to keep my AirPod Max as well. โข Kickstand - OMG I can't stress enough how much of a game changer this is! Although it adds some weight to the backpack it is well worth it because the backpack easily stands up by itself which make grabbing things from it so much easier then having to lean the backpack against something. The nice thing about it is that it will automatically pop out on its own when the backpack has stuff in it. โข AirSpeed backpanel - I do like this feature as my back no longer sweet when rushing down a terminal. Cons: โข Front panel stretch shove-it pocket - There is a downside to this pocket. in order to effectively utilize this I have to make sure the top clips are strapped in. if I don't clip the top two clips on the backpack the top of the mesh pocket will flop around. This is annoying because it gets in the way of me unzipping any of the 3 compartments in the backpack. I wish this were more like the 2021 Nebula where the mesh pocket is not dependent on the clips and stays secured when not using the two top clips โข Weight - This is a much heavier backpack compared to my old Nebula. Lifting it up from the ground to my shoulders does take some extra effort. This could be a pro as I'm getting more of a workout. I do love the new Tropos backpack as my new travel pack.

almost perfect, just too big
I really wanted to love this pack. It had everything I was looking for. lightweight, great comfortable straps, an awesome ventilated back panel. BUT the size is just too big for EDC, travel and multi-purpose use. The metal frame, which helps with comfort, is also not ideal for anything outside of hiking. If they made the EXACT same pack as a sub-30L pack with a removable metal frame, this would be the absolute perfect multi-purpose pack. But this one had to be returned.

I wanted to like this bag, but the lack of space made me choose the Nebula.
I bought this and the Nebula to see which would work better as an everyday bag for work and occasional travel. I really wanted to like this one, but a few things ultimately pushed me toward the Nebula. The good: - The bag is tall and feels very sturdy. -The kickstand is a nice feature and works well. - The shoulder straps are comfortable. The downsides (for me): - While the kickstand is a cool idea, the metal frame pressed into my lower back when I tested it, which made it uncomfortable. -The laptop compartment is smaller than the main compartment, leaving limited room for other gadgets. It also only opens halfway, so accessing items means digging around in a tight space. -The waist strap was another issue. You can remove the straps, but the two side flaps remain and kept getting in the way when putting the backpack on. Small annoyances like this add up, especially at this price. - I have the same gripe with the Nebula, but Iโm not a fan of the front mesh pocket. Itโs convenient for quickly stuffing something in, but the compression straps get in the way. You have to leave them unclipped if you want easy access to the other compartments. -Overall, the bag felt narrow. Compared to the Nebula, I couldnโt fit all of my gear inside, mainly because the laptop compartment doesnโt offer as much space.

Returned the Nebula, Kept the Tropos
I have used both the Osprey Nebula and Tropos, and after some real world use, I ended up returning the Nebula and keeping the Tropos. The decision came down to three reasons: 1. Laptop compartment protection and capacity With the Nebula, I couldnโt comfortably fit both my company issued 14โ laptop and my personal 16โ laptop at the same time. The Tropos, on the other hand accommodates both without any issue. More importantly, the laptops feel well-separated and secure, even when biking on uneven roads, I donโt worry about them shifting around or knocking into each other inside the bag. 2. Comfort during long carry times I tested both backpacks on flights with the same load. After several hours of wearing them while waiting at the airport, the Tropos was noticeably more comfortable than the Nebula. I believe this is largely due to Ospreyโs AirSpeed suspended mesh back panel, which does a much better job distributing weight and reducing pressure on the back. 3. Structure and overall shape Again thanks to the AirSpeed system, the Tropos has a full frame that extends not just across the back but down to the base. As a result, the bag maintains its shape even when it is not fully packed. The Tropos looks and feels upright and structured, whereas the Nebula tends to collapse and feel soft when lightly loaded. Conclusion The Tropos is one of those backpacks that is hard to go back from once you have experienced it. If you value laptop protection, comfort during long wear, and a structured feel, the Tropos is well worth it.
