Great read!
Great read. I have been a avid fan of Harffy's ever since reading the first book in this series The serpent sword. This is a great book about the Saxon people who have settled in England and gives a good glimpse into the violent and hard times that were the early dark ages of England, before King Alfred the great. The story is told through the eyes of Beobrand a young warrior who comes to Northumbria to from Kent. This particular book is the 3rd in the series. You definitely want to start with the first, Serpent sword. Anyways this book finds Beo riding south from Northubria on a errand for his king through hostile territory, this book like the first two is full of action, blood feuds and the roaring clash of the shield wall and it grabs your attention from beginning to end. I really enjoy his development of the main character Beobrand and how Beo is constantly at odds with his inner demon his anger, temper and quickness to resort to violence with out thinking of the consequences, and how he fears that he is just like his father was, a mean bully who loved to hurt people, and that he will become just like him or maybe he already is just like him. Anyways this is a action packed story of the sword song and about a blood feud and how far some will go to claim it. If you enjoy Bernard Cornwell then you will love this series!

This series is a great summer read. I loved it.
Because I got this on my kindle, read it for free program, I just assumed that you get what you pay for. I started with book 1 and read all four chronicles in 10 days. I really liked them. I would have liked them at $10.00 per book, if you are fascinated by the middle ages, you will like this series.

Engrossing historical fiction
Beobrand rides far in this fourth book in the series, and of course fights in the shield wall again.Blood is spilled, loss ensues, friendships grow stronger, blood feuds take another turn. The time period was one I knew little about when I began the series, but by now it is much more familiar. Beobrand and his following are a window to a fiercer time, yet people are people and the longing for revenge, God, and love still remain. Please do yourself a favor and read this series!

So glad I found this wonderful writer!
I'm a relatively new reader of Matthew Harffy's books, but I am so glad I found his work. The Bernicia Chronicles feature historical accuracy, excellent depictions of day-to-day life as well as period fighting techniques, and wonderful characters (even if he did kill off one of my favorites). Highly recommended!

Another great installment in this compelling series.
I've enjoyed all the Bernicia Chronicles novels and this one was no exception. An exciting trip through Anglo Saxon England in the 7th century, full of action, brutal battle scenes and memorable characters. Well researched and well written it's very hard to put down until the final page. If you like Cornwell or Giles Kristian you'll love this!

Mastery at historical fiction.
I absolutely love the Bernicia Chronicles. Mr. Harffy has done a fantastic job at creating a story that got can buy into. You take the journey with the characters and feel the sadness and disappointment with their losses. I listened to the audio version of the first 5 and cannot wait until book 6 comes out on audio.
