RØDE VideoMic Me Compact Directional Smartphone Microphone with 3.5mm TRRS Connector for Mobile Filmmaking and Content Creation

This is a review of the item itself. Not a review of service/packaging/delivery etc. I have had this mic for a couple of months now and i love it. If you are looking to improve the audio quality of your smartphone movies, you can't go wrong with this mic. I have used it on an iphone 6s, 6s+ as well as a samsung galaxy s7 edge and it works PERFECTLY. The audio quality is exactly what you would expect from a rode product i.e. second to none ! PLEASE NOTE, the mic does stick out from the phone (totes obvs) so its PROBABLY not recommended for phones where the mic and camera are next to each other as you might see the mic in your shot. The sound quality is crisp and clean and not muffled in any way shape or form. The difference over built in mics are night and day. This is a directional shotgun mic so sounds coming from the sides or behind the mic are greatly reduced as you'd hope and expect from a shotgun mic. I own a few rode mics and would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone! Pair this mic with a moondogs anamorphic lens and you have yourself a powerhouse of a camera for some indie/run 'n' gun style videography ! I have read that a few people have had issues with a weird clicking sound during recording. This can be the case but the solution to rectify is simple. Put your phone into airplane mode ! The wifi or radio in mobile devices is what can cause this. Have you ever had your mobile next to a speaker and you hear that weird noise ? same thing here.

What I like is it sounds like a cardioid powered mic but it is unpowered analog - and works better in my galaxy s10+ than the akg mic on the included headphones. It has a headphone socket for monitoring. Also its a lot louder than the mics that are built into the phone. It is not stereo like the built in s10+ mics but for vocals that's better for me. It comes with quite large fluffy pop filter which on my s10+ will cover up to 1/4 of the bottom of the screen. So I only put it on when I've set every volume level to my preference. This pop filter does stop pops well. Tried recording deliberatly sibilant sources and bassy things with no obvious clipping. I like it - it's stopped all the usb mic latency nonsense and 'research' I was wasting my life doing with my phone and made me sound better for peanuts. I'm not finding it picks up rf from the phone plugged into the headphone jack with headphones attached to the rear of it. Be aware it is your app that has to be programmed to push live audio out to the headphone socket terminal to it's rear. It will sit there happily allowing you to play mp3s from whatever app but you won't hear this mic *live* unless your recording app has that specific feature. Worth more than it sells for imo.

To preface, I'm a professional audio engineer and I've taught music and music production for two years. I used one of these a few years ago when the college I was working at bought some. Initially I was impressed. The improved directionality and 'focus' from what is essentially a mini shotgun mic was notably better than my phone or the college's iPads could capture internally. Since then I've bought a new phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 10+) and its mics are much cleverer than those on the iPad Air, to the point that doing an A/B test of this versus an internal phone mic recording showed very little difference. While it was noticeably better through the Røde, the difference only presented itself through professional-grade reference headphones (when I'm just recording little demos on my phone, I don't usually plug in headphones at all - let alone the big fragile expensive ones). I think that's the main problem with this mic. For the kinds of things I'm likely to record with it it's less convenient to have to plug it in every time - so much so that after a few weeks I think I'd just not bother. Not to mention that my phone (and most others these days) doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack, so it's dangling off a 1" dongle cable. As for its main role as a video mic, on a device that has a headphone jack it does clip on nicely and point at your subject, ignoring lots of surrounding noise...but my phone's mic is just as good. The Røde's larger diaphragm definitely helps in terms of frequency range, but for acoustic instruments and vocals it makes little difference. This is not a bad microphone. I got it for £40 and would've kept it if my phone weren't so good as to make it superfluous.

There are cheaper options than the Rode iPhone mic but they have a good pedigree in video and DSLR mics so I spent the extra to get this. It's well made and attaches to the iPhone securely. The mic is fataly flawed for many applications because it is not insulated against interference, this means the phone has to be in flight safe mode while recording video which makes it useless for streaming video or FaceTime, Skype etc if you are working over a data connection. I live streamed from several events with the Video mic me and everyone complained about the terrible crackling and noise. I've since discovered that to avoid interference you need a mic that goes not into the headphone socket but into the lightning connector. After trying several solutions I have found by far the best is the Shure MV88, it angled 90 degree to record front and back, comes with a small protective case and a foam windjammer. So far it has performed flawlessly with perfect sound and no interference even when live streaming over 4G. I'm delighted with it...sorry Rode, I have several of your mics but on this occasion you've dropped the ball.

To me, this is a must-have for anyone wanting to shoot video on an iPad or iPhone. It's small and it's simple and it solves the two main problems of the inbuilt mic: First, because it's directional, it doesn't pick up breathing and sniffing noises from the operator like the phone's inbuilt mic does. Secondly, it comes with a fuzzy windcover, which is extremely effective at cutting out wind noise, which otherwise ruins so many videos. Now, this is not a "shotgun mic", and never claims to be, and it's all the better for it. A shotgun mic is a log tube mic that is highly directional. Short shotgun mics are rarely much use. The VideoMic Me has a cardioid (heart-shaped) pickup pattern, so it picks up more sound from the side than a true shotgun would, but it really isn't an issue. The only problem I have with this is that it's only for phones, so there's no way to mount it on a DSLR camera for instance. It's nice whendevices can be easily shared between different filming rigs, but sadly this isn't one of those times. This also means the VideoMic Me is really only for the phone/tablet in a plain configuration. I've just bought an iOgrapher case for my iPad Mini, and the VideoMic Me doesn't fit. Well, you can just squeeze it in and no more, but the mic contacts the case, picking up a lot of handling noise, and the fluffy windcover often brushes against your hand, making it an extra source of noise. I was going to look into building an adaptor to site it elsewhere on the case, but as this mic has no suspension, the handling noise would still be a problem. Oh, and one little tip: the VideoMic Me doesn't come with a carrying pouch of any kind, but with the windshield on, it's just the right size to fit in the end of an old sock. This keeps the fluffy material from getting trapped and pulled, or embedded with dirt.

I bought this to improve my YouTube videos for my sons channel (Henry's Hysterical History). The videos before this were suffering from wind noise and were picking up a lot of background audio that I didn't want. The microphone comes with a wind muffler to reduce wind noise. This is effective, but doesn't fit as tightly as I would like - I am genuinely worried at times ti will fall off if I'm tipping the mic forwards so might look at other attachment methods. The clipping method is brilliant and works flawlessly on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I also use this with my DJI Osmo Gimbal so have bought an extension cable to mount the microphone onto the gimbal instead. Directional audio has vastly improved the sound quality and allows me to focus the audio recording on the subject of the video and cut out a lot of background cars or chatter. Overall I highly recommend this if you plan on using your videos for anything more than home use. Audio is hard to fix in post production so getting it right first time is a life saver.

Not bad but definitely not worth the price... It works well at filtering out general ambient noise but the difference between my HTC One M9's internal mic and this is negligible. Build quality is good and the wind soc is effective.

Excellent microphone (would expect no less from Rode) that enables you to focus on sound in front of the phone even when there are people talking nearby. It isn't total isolation and the phone (Samsung S22) has some internal processing that seems to try to cut backchat as well but produces an occasional phasing effect. The supplied 'dead cat' is excellent at defeating wind noise (not yet tried it in really high conditions) but you need a phone where the mic/headphone socket is well away from the camera (it is on the S22). The clip is really good at holding the mic in place and you have a headphone socket on the back of the mic for monitoring. Fantastic.

Il microfono si presenta solido e robusto, realizzato in metallo sul corpo principale, e in gomma dura sul supporto a scorrimento. Il "dead hamster" (dato che come gatto sarebbe un po' piccolo) è una spugnetta rivestita di pelo e sagomata per fissarsi saldamente sul corpo del microfono tramite un anello di gomma (un po' macchinoso da installare bene, dato che entra veramente stretto nella sua scanalatura, ma sicuramente difficile da perdere una volta in posizione). Avviso: l'uscita posteriore con il jack da 3.5mm per le cuffie non è gestita dal microfono, ma fa solo da ponte per l'audio in uscita del telefono. Tradotto: non potete ascoltare in tempo reale l'audio che state registrando direttamente dal microfono. Per farlo avete bisogno di un'applicazione che supporti questa funzione di registrazione-riproduzione combinata. Il microfono poi prende l'energia necessaria al suo funzionamento dal telefono. Questo significa che se montato su supporti da cui non riesce a trarre energia, come ad esempio una normale presa microfono tipo quella del pc, risulterà muto. Ad ogni modo, l'ho portato a spasso durante una partita di softair nei boschi. La direzionalità del microfono (in ambiente esterno, quindi senza riverberi) è ottima. Io ci parlavo da dietro, a voce più alta del normale da una ventina di cm, e comunque si sentiva molto più chiaramente chi gli parlava da davanti, anche da qualche metro di distanza. Viene da sè che anche tutti i disturbi tipici dei video registrati nel mezzo dei boschi sono risultati notevolmente ridotti, soprattutto il vento, filtrato egregiamente dal criceto morto in dotazione. Un bel passo in avanti rispetto all'audio standard di uno smartphone, anche se di fascia alta.

Esta es de las mejores compras que he hecho, llevo ya alrededor de un año usándolo y ha sido excelente, siempre graba con calidad. En el exterior capta excelente el sonido y ayuda bastante a contrarrestar el ruido del aire. Es un micrófono dirigido, para que lo tengan en cuenta. Una cosa, no lo recomiendo para grabar vídeos en casa si eres youtuber o quieres serlo, porque la calidad ahí no es la que buscas para audios de este tipo

Greetings, this little mic is exceptional. To be honest i was a bit skeptical when i ordered, but was willing to try and hoped it would improve the audio capture on my phone. First, the build quality is extremely good. Also the little secondary piece that sandwiches the the phone between the TRRS plug and the phone really helps to stabilize the connection. After trying the mic a few times i was amazed at the quality of what it captured. Even with the subject 6-8' away, the sound was very good and did not change the tones and ranges of the voice at all. The polar pattern of this mic is very good and the sound rejection from the back of the mic is great. In other-words, i could be talking while holding the phone (mic pointed away from me at the subject) and i'm guessing approx. 75-85% of my voice's volume is rejected so any small noises coming from behind the mic would be rejected nicely. Also, i do not hear any noticeable hiss coming from this mic. The mic came with a good quality dead cat that works very well, while still maintaining good crisp mid and high frequencies. I would buy this mic again.
