Silverline Ignition Spark Tester 270mm (633982)

After several reviews complaining about failed bulbs, I ordered this with some trepidation. I needn't have worried. The device is extremely simple: you plug it in between the existing HT lead and existing plug, and it flashes neon-red every time the plug sparks. I was concerned that the gadget wouldn't fit the plug in my mower: it fitted just fine. (In fact, I didn't find a plug it didn't fit - even motorcycle plugs were OK. It seems pretty universal.) Perhaps the only drawback is the male contact (the stick bit, that fits the existing HT lead) is quite long - great for when you've got shrouded leads, but a bit awkward when you haven't (because you have to make sure it comes nowhere near any earthed metal. I'm going to try wrapping a piece of heat-shrink onto it. I found the flash to be clear and perfectly bright enough for my workshop, (note to reviewers who said the bulb was dead on delivery: it's a neon - it's not supposed to to test continuous!) and it saved me hours tracking down a fault in a magneto circuit. Overall, great little product, great price, seems very reliable (nothing really to go wrong). I can see it will be part of my toolbox for years to come.

Arrived on time, suitably packaged. Used to test the spark on a petrol engine; a Clark power washer with Honda G200, it should fit any standard spark plug. 2nd one in 50 yrs! I could not find the old one, which was a bit different so bought this one. Cable is a bit short but was ok. The exposed plug part is a bit long but again ok. Did the job. The clear plastic lights up if the connection is good. This tells you if the power is getting to the plug.

Bought this as a means to test my ignition system on my brother's car. Too make sure that the ignition system works.

Metal shaft is too long for testing coil packs. Spark just jumps from tester to outer body of coil pack.

Good for testing circuit

This attaches easily between HT lead and plug top - its a clip on fitting rather than a screw fitting so you'll need a screwcap rather than a thread on the top of the plug. The flickering light is very difficult to see if you're using it in bright daylight but once out of the sun or shrouded a bit then it's clear enough. Proved my outboard plugs were getting a spark, so the non-start thing must be something else...
